1 in 3 children forced out of grassroots sport as cost of living crisis risks losing next Harry Kane

Damning study reveals working-class families are cutting back on heating and food just to keep their children on the pitch.

One in three British children are being forced to quit or cut back on grassroots sports as cash-strapped families struggle to afford soaring club fees and equipment costs.

In a damning indictment of the squeeze facing working-class households, more than a third of parents, 34 per cent, reveal that the price of keeping their children in local sports is now severe enough to hit their ability to pay for essentials like food and heating.

The nationwide investigation, conducted by sports supplier FORZA alongside mental health charity Sport in Mind, warns that the playing fields that once forged the country's greatest sporting heroes are rapidly turning into an exclusive playground for the well-off.

The crisis comes as England captain Harry Kane stands at the summit of world football following his historic Ballon d’Or victory. Kane famously began his career on frost-bitten council pitches turning out for Ridgeway Rovers in north-east London.

Sports leaders warn that under the current economic squeeze, the next generation of working-class talent is being priced out before they even lace up their boots.

According to the study, 32 per cent of parents have already seen their child reduce participation, while 66 per cent warn they could be forced to withdraw their children from organised sport altogether within the next 12 months.

The research puts median club dues at £60 a month, or £720 a year, per child. Membership and participation fees were identified by 31 per cent of parents as the single biggest financial barrier, while travel costs add upwards of £1,200 a year to family outgoings.

The grassroots cull coincides with a mounting public health emergency, with one in five children aged 8 to 16 in England currently suffering from a probable mental health condition.

Neil Harris, Chief Executive of Sport in Mind, warned that locking children out of sport damages far more than their fitness: “With one in five children aged 8–16 in England experiencing a probable mental health disorder, ensuring young people have access to activities that support their mental wellbeing has never been more important.

“Research shows that more active children tend to have higher levels of wellbeing, are happier and are less likely to experience loneliness. For many young people, sport is about so much more than being physically active. That’s why it is so concerning to see the financial barriers highlighted by FORZA’s research. No child should be excluded from the mental and physical health benefits of sport because of their household income.”

A parliamentary petition has now been submitted to Westminster calling for ministers to introduce direct financial support and sports vouchers for low-income households struggling with kit and club fees.

Meanwhile, struggling community clubs battling their own soaring overheads are being offered a lifeline through the Cash4Clubs scheme, backed by football icons Alan Shearer and Graeme Souness.

The initiative, delivered alongside charity Sported, is providing £500,000 in vital funding across 230 sports clubs, offering 225 grants of £2,000 and five top grants of £10,000 to help grassroots teams buy essential equipment, attract members, and keep their doors open to the community. Applications are open until January 1 via the Cash4Clubs website.
