Sergio Garcia holds talks with Luke Donald over Ryder Cup spot after LIV Golf exit
Sergio Garcia is looking for a return to the Ryder Cup

Sergio Garcia is eyeing a return to the DP World Tour before the 46-year-old looks to become a part of the European Ryder Cup, and he's already spoken with Luke Donald.

Prior to the rebel golf league preparing for liquidation, prompted by new investor BC Partners withdrawing due to player commitment numbers, Garcia announced his departure from LIV Golf.

Garcia was far from the only one to make the leap. He followed in the footsteps of Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, and Ian Poulter. In 2025, Rahm and Hatton spearheaded the European Ryder Cup team to a triumph over American rivals on their home turf at Bethpage Black.

But Garcia and Poulter may not have the chance to captain or co-captain the team thanks to their time commitment to LIV Golf.

“I think everyone knows how much I love the Ryder Cup, and I just hope that I can be involved,” Garcia told Golf Magic.

“I had a little chat with Luke in Ireland, mentioning that I was trying as hard as I could to make the team, and he said that he didn’t expect anything else, so that was nice.”

Garcia noted he spoke with Donald, who will be aiming for a three-peat at Adare Manor in 2027; the major champion has not yet discussed the matter with Rory McIlroy, a leading figure for both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf's exposure.

“I haven’t really talked to Rory [McIlroy] about it much, but I have talked to Justin Rose and a couple of others, and obviously they are on the same page,” Garcia added. “If there is any way that I can help, then they are happy for me to be there, and that’s what I’m going to try to do. So we’ll see what the year brings us.”

Garcia acknowledged that earning a spot on the Ryder Cup squad will be a tough challenge, especially as numerous former LIV Golf competitors make their way back to the European tour.

He added that he “wouldn’t be saying or trying to make it into the team” if he didn’t believe he had a chance.

Earlier this year, Poulter also voiced a strong desire to be involved in the Ryder Cup in whatever capacity possible amid his departure. Despite exiting LIV Golf, significant hurdles remain.

Under long-standing regulations through the DP World Tour, key figures including Poulter, Garcia, Lee Westwood, and Graeme McDowell are restricted from filling captain or vice-captain roles for Team Europe, with no policy changes expected to ease their return.

A pivotal DP World Tour regulation enacted in Jan 1, 2017, well ahead of LIV Golf's launch, stipulates that any golfer who declines European Tour membership or misses the mandatory annual tournament quota forfeits eligibility to captain or co-captain the European Ryder Cup team.
