Martin O’Neill has suggested that Haissem Hassan’s impressive performance against Dundee United could influence his thinking ahead of Celtic’s trip to Falkirk on Sunday.
The winger was introduced at half-time during Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw at Celtic Park, replacing Callum Osmand as O’Neill made two attacking changes with his side trailing 2-1.
The changes transformed Celtic’s attacking play, with Hassan particularly influential down the right.
His pace and direct running caused problems for Dundee United throughout the second half, while several dangerous deliveries into the penalty area went unrewarded.
Speaking to Sky Sports Scotland after the match, O’Neill was asked whether the performances of Hassan and Jota had strengthened their cases for starting places.
“Well, of course, you’re always thinking that people who make an impact in the game can maybe start a match.”
The Celtic manager then singled out Hassan for particular praise.
“I’ve got no problem with Hassan in the sense that he’s still getting to grips with the game, the Scottish game.
“He’s fast and furious at times. But his particular second-half performance I thought was outstanding.”
Hassan’s display was one of the positives on a frustrating night for Celtic.
Having taken the lead through Durán after 18 minutes, the Hoops conceded twice in quick succession as Zac Sapsford and Neil Farrugia turned the game around.
O’Neill responded by introducing two natural wide players at the interval, with the changes giving Celtic greater attacking width and more opportunities to deliver crosses into the box.
Liam Scales eventually equalised in the 65th minute after meeting Jota’s delivery, but Celtic were unable to find a winner.
Hassan also tested Dundee United goalkeeper Jack Walton with a powerful effort from outside the penalty area.
The winger has been in and out of O’Neill’s starting eleven since arriving at Celtic, with the manager previously acknowledging that he is still adjusting to Scottish football.
However, his latest display has provided another argument for greater involvement.
O’Neill was keen to stress that the half-time substitutions were not a criticism of the players withdrawn.
“It had nothing to do with the players that were replaced. I thought Kasper was working really strongly. He helped make the goal as well too.
“And young Callum has done really fine for us, considering he’s playing out of position.”
There is also the question of Jota’s readiness to start matches following his lengthy injury absence.
O’Neill indicated in his post-match press conference that the Portuguese winger remains some way off returning to the starting lineup.
That could make Hassan’s situation particularly interesting ahead of the visit to Falkirk.
Celtic remain four points ahead of Rangers following Wednesday’s draw, and O’Neill will be looking for an improved performance when his side return to Premiership action on Sunday.
