Rockets (5-1) lament transition defense after first loss of season

DALLAS -- Heading into Friday’s Emirates NBA Cup 2026 matchup against the Mavericks, the Rockets knew the combination of Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg could exploit the one weakness Houston showed throughout its five-game winning streak.

Transition defense.

Houston (5-1) ultimately suffered its first loss of the season, falling 116-111 (box score) at Dallas’ American Airlines Center. The glaring factor in the Rockets’ loss was their inability to contain the Mavericks (4-2) in transition, where they gave up 28 fast-break points.

“Transition,” said Rockets head coach Ime Udoka, referring to the team’s one weakness during its five-game winning streak. “They dominated that tonight, 28 to 10. Not necessarily off a ton of turnovers, but playing fast off makes. Too many times, those guys [Mavericks] got their opportunities when everyone was jogging back and not getting set.”

For the NBA as a whole, the Rockets currently rank ninth in transition defense rating (109.1) and No. 12 in overall defense (109.6). Offensively, they continue to lead the league with a 120.4 rating.

Dallas scored 72 points in the second half, and Houston gave up an uncharacteristic 40 points in the fourth quarter, Most of that scoring came from Irving, who finished with a game-high 35 points, and Flagg, who finished with 33. In total, those two combined for 27 of the 40 Mavericks points in the final period.

The Mavericks’ late-game execution was impressive, but Houston made their job easier by failing to maintain the defensive discipline that helped produce its undefeated start.

“Defensively, I don’t think we had control throughout the whole game,” said Rockets point guard Fred VanVleet. “I didn’t think our defense was sharp enough to take them out of the flow of things. You combine that with not making shots at a high level, and it is going to be tough.”

“Our offense was unbalanced, so they were able to run out on us. They just played faster with more pace and more force. Our lack of energy and sharpness contributed to that.”

During the five-game winning streak to open the 2026-27 season, the Rockets masked their fundamental defensive issues by scoring efficiently and building comfortable leads. Still, the Mavericks exploited those weaknesses by using Irving’s ability to create offense and Flagg’s athleticism and aggressive approach. In all, those two stars scored 68 of Dallas’ 116 points.

The Rockets won’t have a full 24 hours to digest the loss to the Mavericks, as they immediately have an opportunity to get back to their winning ways. On Saturday, the Oklahoma City Thunder (4-1) will visit Houston’s Toyota Center to begin a three-game homestand for the Rockets.

“It is good when you take an ‘L’ (loss) and quickly bounce back and try to right the wrongs the next night,” said Rockets star Kevin Durant. “That is the great part about the NBA. It takes the sting out of a loss a little bit knowing that you have another one (game) coming up.”

Tipoff between the Rockets and Thunder is at 7:30 p.m. Central, and the game will be televised and streamed via Space City Home Network (SCHN) and NBA TV.
