World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz has dramatically revised his 2026 schedule by adding the ATP 500 Vienna Open to his campaign, a strategic pivot triggered by his unexpected early departure from the Shanghai Masters. Initially, Alcaraz intended to compete in just three remaining ATP events: the Paris Masters, ATP Finals, and Davis Cup Finals. However, the Spanish star’s plans shifted following the postponement of the lucrative Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia, originally slated for October 21-24.
Tournament organizers confirmed the news with enthusiasm: “WELCOME IN VIENNA, CARLOS ALCARAZ! Last-minute news, huge excitement! Carlos will be kicking off his tournament on Tuesday, October 27!” This move comes after the Six Kings Slam, a high-profile event featuring Alcaraz alongside Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, and Learner Tien, was delayed due to security concerns following attacks on Riyadh airport. The event’s first prize of $6 million remains intact but has been rescheduled for December.
Alcaraz’s shock second-round exit in Shanghai to Zizou Bergs, barely a week after his Japan Open triumph, left him with a sizeable gap before the Paris Masters starting November 2. Without the Six Kings Slam, his match practice would have been minimal ahead of the crucial Paris event. Now, with his Vienna Open entry, Alcaraz ensures consistent competitive action, joining an elite field headlined by top seed Alexander Zverev, who is on course to finish 2026 as year-end No. 1. Other notable entrants include Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli, Frances Tiafoe, Alex de Minaur, and Jakub Mensik.
Notably absent is World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, forced to withdraw due to a knee injury, unable to defend his Vienna title. Alcaraz is set for his second outing in Austria, having reached the semi-finals in his 2021 debut before falling in three tight sets to Zverev.
Alcaraz’s 2026 ATP season will culminate with the Paris Masters—where he seeks to advance beyond his best quarter-final finish—followed by the ATP Finals in Turin. The seven-time Grand Slam champion aims to capture his maiden ATP Finals crown after finishing runner-up to Sinner last year. His season will close by representing Spain at the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, Italy.
This late but decisive adjustment to Carlos Alcaraz’s schedule underlines his adaptability and commitment to maintaining peak form despite unforeseen disruptions. With the Vienna Open now on his agenda, the Spanish prodigy is set to enter the final stretch of the season battle-hardened and ready to challenge for more titles.
