A footballer has been sacked by his club after launching a rock at a linesman's face, causing him to sustain a fractured cheekbone. Video footage of the shocking incident has now surfaced after being captured on camera. Jhon Perlaza was representing Club Deportivo Ciudad de Yantzaza in a fixture against Rio Aguarico FC in Ecuador when the episode occurred on Saturday, October 17. While players disputed the referee's decisions on the pitch, Perlaza picked up a stone while hiding behind an oil drum near the substitutes' bench and hurled it towards assistant referee Lenin Ojeda.

His initial effort went wide, but he flung a second stone shortly afterwards, hitting Ojeda squarely in the face and sending him tumbling to the ground, clutching his face in pain.

The wounded official received assistance from medical personnel before being transported to hospital by ambulance, as reported by NeedToKnow.

Reports indicated he sustained a fractured cheekbone and visible wounds around his left eye, though no official medical statement regarding his condition has yet been issued.

The fixture, part of Ecuador's 2026 Ascenso Nacional in the Group D semi-final phase of the third-tier Segunda Categoría, concluded in a 1-0 victory for Río Aguarico FC.

Ciudad de Yantzaza subsequently released a statement denouncing the incident, offering a public apology and confirming Perlaza's immediate dismissal from the club.

The Ecuadorian Referees' Association announced it would pursue criminal proceedings against Perlaza in response to the gravity of Ojeda's injuries.

Luis Muentes, representing the association, informed local media: "The player will face criminal prosecution because we cannot let this go unpunished."

Muentes further stated: "We hope the player's punishment will be announced, and we hope football will never be played at that stadium again."
