Don Hutchison believes that a Rangers hero would easily be worth £100m, considering how inflated the transfer market is today.

The former Liverpool and Everton midfielder was always keen on a move to Ibrox, but things did not materialise during his playing days.

He has even gone on record to confirm that he came close to joining Rangers, but ended up moving to West Ham instead.

Don Hutchison makes £100m admission on Barry Ferguson

Hutchison believes that Barry Ferguson would be worth over £100m if he were still playing today. The BBC pundit was impressed with how Ferguson was able to dictate a game, and also lauded his technical skills. His nephew, Lewis Ferguson, has been linked with a return to Ibrox, and the former Premier League man sees similarities between the two.

Despite all the plaudits Barry Ferguson received, Hutchison still believes that he did not get the flowers he deserves. He believes that he was someone who could have gone on to play for the legendary Liverpool or Manchester United sides.

Hutchison said: “Barry was a top player. I see little bits of him in Lewis. But I think Barry was ridiculously underrated. He played in a great Rangers side, captained the club and won a lot of trophies. But he could have played for Liverpool or Manchester United.

“In terms of dictating a game and being technically brilliant, Fergie was right up there. He went to Blackburn but he was better than that. We have chats now about what guys in the past would be worth £100m now. Fergie would be, if he was playing now, he’d be worth over £100m – easy.”

How Hutchison nearly joined Rangers

Hutchison has revealed that he was close to joining Rangers back when Dick Advocaat was in charge. In 2001, he was leaving Sunderland, and it was between the Light Blues and West Ham. Despite the financial package being the same, he opted to move to London.

He admits that he regrets it as he grew up watching the Gers and his father was also a supporter. Hutchison says that it was the toss of a coin that saw him joining the Hammers.

He said: “I was unbelievably close to joining Rangers myself. Advocaat was the manager around 2001 and I was leaving Sunderland. It was Dick and Rangers or Glenn Roeder and West Ham. Financially, it was exactly the same deal. And Rangers were in the Champions League under Advocaat at the time.

“There was a big pull because my dad was a massive Rangers fan and I’ve always been a supporter as well. I wanted to play for the club. But at the very last second, it was a toss of a coin. Rangers or West Ham. And it’s still a regret of mine that I didn’t go to Rangers. I went to West Ham for a second spell.”
