Jaguars legend Tom Coughlin among five Hall of Fame coaching nominees

Former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Tom Coughlin is one step closer to earning a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Thursday that Coughlin is among five coaching nominees remaining under consideration for the Class of 2027. Coughlin joins Bill Belichick, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves, and Mike Shanahan on the shortlist, which was narrowed from an original group of 14 candidates.

The Hall of Fame's Coach Subcommittee will meet virtually on November 17 to select one candidate to advance to the final stage of the selection process. That candidate will join 13 modern-era players and one contributor on the ballot for the Class of 2027.

Coughlin's coaching career spanned two decades and included a pivotal role in establishing the Jaguars as an NFL franchise.

Jacksonville hired Coughlin as its first head coach in 1994, a year before the team's inaugural season. Under his leadership, the Jaguars made four consecutive playoff appearances from 1996 through 1999, winning two division titles and reaching the AFC Championship Game twice. In just their second season, they upset the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos on the road before falling to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

Jacksonville returned to the conference championship following a franchise-best 14-2 regular season in 1999.

Coughlin compiled a 68-60 regular-season record during his eight seasons as Jacksonville's head coach, helping develop franchise cornerstones including Tony Boselli, Fred Taylor, Mark Brunell, and Jimmy Smith.

He later coached the New York Giants from 2004 through 2015, leading the franchise to Super Bowl victories over the Patriots following the 2007 and 2011 seasons. Across his 20 seasons as an NFL head coach, Coughlin compiled a 182-157 record, including postseason games.

His contributions to Jacksonville were formally recognized when he was inducted into the Pride of the Jaguars in 2024. However, the road to Canton remains difficult.

All five coaches on this year's shortlist reached the same stage of consideration for the Class of 2026. Belichick was ultimately selected as the coaching finalist, but failed to receive enough votes for induction, a decision that generated considerable controversy. Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as New England's head coach, is again among Coughlin's competition for the lone coaching finalist position. The last coach inducted into the Hall of Fame was Don Coryell in 2023.

The Class of 2027 will be announced during NFL Honors in February, ahead of Super Bowl LXI, with enshrinement scheduled for August in Canton, Ohio.
