Eagles' offensive collapse raises questions for Nick Sirianni, Sean Mannion

The Philadelphia Eagles have spent the past several weeks searching for an offensive identity. Still, Sunday's 27-10 loss to the Washington Commanders may have offered the clearest indication yet that the current approach isn't working.

Philadelphia scored 10 points in the opening quarter before being shut out over the final 45 minutes, allowing Washington to score 27 unanswered points and extend the Eagles' losing streak to six games. The offense finished with 268 total yards, averaged 3.1 yards per rushing attempt and converted just five of 15 third-down opportunities.

For head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, the performance raised questions that go beyond injuries or the absence of starting quarterback Jalen Hurts. Philadelphia continues to struggle with pass protection, offensive spacing, running-game efficiency, and sustaining drives.

Eagles cannot build on early offensive success

Philadelphia appeared to have momentum after opening the scoring with Jake Elliott's 40-yard field goal and capitalizing on a Washington fumble with Saquon Barkley's 5-yard touchdown run.

However, the Eagles' first-quarter production proved misleading. The touchdown came on a short field, with the offense needing just 26 yards after Drew Mukuba forced a fumble and Zack Baun recovered it.

When Philadelphia needed sustained drives, its offense repeatedly failed to deliver. Tanner McKee was sacked five times, lost a fumble, and threw an interception as Washington's defense controlled the line of scrimmage.

The Eagles also struggled to create rushing lanes for Barkley, who finished with 30 yards on 13 carries. Elijah Mitchell added 34 yards on 11 attempts, but Philadelphia rarely established manageable down-and-distance situations.

Poor situational execution compounds problems

The Eagles' fourth-quarter possession illustrated their difficulties. Philadelphia moved into scoring position and appeared to have three points after Elliott converted a field goal, but an illegal formation penalty on Jordan Mailata erased the kick.

Elliott then missed the ensuing 41-yard attempt, leaving the Eagles scoreless and allowing Washington to maintain control. McKee's earlier strip-sack created another costly change of possession, turning a potential scoring opportunity into a Washington possession that produced a field goal. Those mistakes have become a recurring issue for an offense that entered Week 8 with one of the NFL's highest three-and-out rates. Philadelphia has struggled to avoid negative plays, leaving little margin for error when its running game is ineffective.

Sirianni faces difficult decisions before bye.

The Eagles host the New York Giants next week before their bye, creating a natural point for the coaching staff to evaluate the offense and decide whether meaningful changes are needed.

Philadelphia has several talented players capable of producing more than the 10 points it managed against Washington. Makai Lemon caught six passes for 57 yards, while Eli Stowers added three receptions for 53 yards, demonstrating that the passing game still has productive options.

However, the Eagles must improve their protection, establish a more efficient running attack, and create better situations for McKee.

With the team's losing streak reaching six, the pressure is no longer limited to the quarterback. Sirianni and Mannion must show their offense can produce reliably before Philadelphia's season slips further.
