Tottenham Hotspur have been advised against dwelling on potential transfer regrets regarding young defender Luka Vuskovic following his summer departure to Brighton & Hove Albion. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson emphasized that the North London club secured a “very, very good fee” for the center-back, generating substantial profit that justified the decision at the time.
Vuskovic spent the previous season on loan at Hamburg before sealing a permanent move to the Amex Stadium for a reported £46 million fee. The 19-year-old has since established himself as an integral part of Fabian Hurzeler’s defensive setup on the south coast, with Brighton scouts already estimating his future market potential could reach the £100 million mark, mirroring past sales like Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella.
Addressing supporters who might question the wisdom of letting the talented youngster leave, Borson stressed that clubs cannot retain every squad member when restructuring and reshaping their personnel. He noted that securing a guaranteed £46 million provides a massive financial return, removing the need for Tottenham executives to obsess over whether the player eventually commands a nine-figure valuation in future transfer windows.
“You can’t keep every player, and they wanted to turn the squad a little bit. And ultimately they got quite a big fee for him. It’s a big profit. And so I wouldn’t be obsessing too much about whether he’s successful or not. It’s all very easy to say, ‘This is our next £100m player’. It’s not easy to find a buyer for £100m, certainly not a £100m centre-half. They sold them for a very, very good fee. It’s not like they got £15m. They got £46m for him, so there’s plenty built in there in terms of what they guaranteed themselves.”
While Vuskovic is already turning heads in Premier League fixtures for Brighton, Tottenham’s heavy summer investment has left them with high-value defensive assets of their own, including Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke. Borson’s analysis highlights that football clubs are frequently forced to make difficult strategic decisions to balance accounts and refresh their squads.
For Roberto De Zerbi and the Tottenham recruitment team, the focus remains firmly on solving current on-pitch challenges and climbing the Premier League table rather than looking backward at past sales. With substantial funds secured from the Vuskovic transaction already integrated into the club’s financial framework, Spurs must continue backing their current defensive core to deliver results on the pitch.
