Bayern Munich is making headlines in Kenya after President William Ruto announced that the German football giants will face Dutch side Ajax in a historic match to officially open Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi on January 5, 2027.

But beyond the excitement surrounding the upcoming match, two names associated with Bayern Munich are sparking a familiar conversation among Kenyans, particularly members of the Luhya community: Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies.

For some Kenyans, the names may sound familiar not just because of football but also because of the distinctive and sometimes elaborate names found among families in western Kenya.

While the names are not exclusive to the Luhya community, the conversation offers an opportunity to explore why some parents prefer names that stand out rather than those considered common.

Musiala, Alphonso and the appeal of distinctive names

Jamal Musiala is a German international midfielder, while Alphonso Davies is a Canadian international defender, with both playing for Bayern Munich.

For many Kenyans, particularly those familiar with the Luhya community, the names may bring to mind the distinctive names commonly heard among Luhya families.

Their popularity among some families reflects a wider naming culture in which parents may favour names that stand out, carry personal meaning or connect children to family history.

Why Musiala and Alphonso are common among Luhyas

One possible explanation for the popularity of these names is the appeal of distinctive names that sound different from those commonly heard in other communities. Parents may choose them because they like their sound, find them memorable or want their children to have names that stand out.

Family and community influence can also play a role. When a name becomes familiar within a community, other parents may adopt it, helping it spread across families and generations. However, the reasons differ from one family to another, and there is no single explanation for why parents choose Musiala or Alphonso.

Luhya naming traditions also place importance on family history and cultural identity. Children may be named after grandparents or respected relatives, while others receive names reflecting the season or circumstances of their birth. For example, Wafula is associated with a boy born during the rainy season, while Wekesa refers to a boy born during the harvest season.

Christianity has also influenced naming practices, with some families combining traditional Luhya names with biblical or other Christian names.

Although naming preferences vary across Luhya families and subgroups, names can serve as a link between generations and a way of expressing personal preference and identity.

A conversation about identity and heritage

The upcoming Bayern Munich-Ajax fixture may put Musiala and Alphonso in the spotlight, but their names also offer an opportunity to discuss the naming choices familiar to some Kenyan families.

Whether a name is selected because of its sound, meaning, family history or popularity, the decision often reflects what parents want their children’s names to represent.
