Man United Reopens £2bn Stadium Plans to Fans as Fate of 100,000-Seat ‘Wembley of the North’ Hangs in the Balance

Manchester United has launched a new survey inviting supporters to influence plans for the club’s proposed £2 billion stadium, indicating that the controversial design unveiled last year may still change.

Fans have two weeks to submit their views on several aspects of the project, including the quality of the stadium and match-day experience, the club’s heritage, the atmosphere inside the ground, the surrounding area and access to the venue.

The consultation is part of the club’s commitment to involving supporters in decisions about the proposed stadium, which is intended to accommodate 100,000 spectators.

Original Stadium Concept May Be Revised

The latest consultation follows the unveiling of a futuristic stadium design by Foster + Partners last year. The proposed structure, commissioned as part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s vision for a “Wembley of the North”, attracted attention for its distinctive canopy, which was compared to a circus tent.

Although Foster + Partners has since been formally appointed as the project’s architects, the design has not been finalised.

Collette Roche, Manchester United’s chief executive of new stadium development, said in July that the plans were “not set in stone”.

Sources confirmed to Daily Mail Sport that the earlier design was conceptual and that the club is now progressing through the detailed design stage, with supporter feedback forming part of the process.

Survey Follows Support for a New 100,000-Seat Stadium

The club’s latest consultation builds on its largest-ever supporter survey, conducted in September 2024, which gathered responses from 50,000 fans about the future of Old Trafford.

The results showed that 52 per cent of respondents supported building a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000.

Following the survey, Foster + Partners was commissioned to develop the plans for the proposed new home of Manchester United.

The current consultation will allow the club to gather more detailed feedback as the design process continues.

Season Ticket Holders and Members Invited to Participate

The survey will be sent to season ticket holders, cup season ticket holders, executive club members and official members. Supporters who have purchased hospitality at Old Trafford during the past three years will also be invited to take part.

Roche said the project was among the most significant developments the club would undertake over the next century and stressed the importance of involving fans in shaping its outcome.

“Our proposed new stadium is one of the most significant projects Manchester United will undertake in the next 100 years, and it is vital that we shape it together with our fans,” she said.

She added that the stadium was being designed primarily for supporters, making their views on its features and facilities an important part of the process.

Club Seeks Feedback on Atmosphere, Affordability and Accessibility

Roche said Manchester United wanted the consultation process to be thorough and transparent, allowing fans to influence decisions concerning the match-day atmosphere, affordability, accessibility and the traditions associated with Old Trafford.

She said previous engagement had demonstrated genuine excitement among supporters about the prospect of a new stadium, while acknowledging that some fans had questions and concerns about the plans.

“Listening to those views and ensuring they are shaping the design is a vital part of the process,” Roche said.

She added that working with supporters would help the club develop a stadium that reflects Manchester United’s identity, supports success on the pitch and provides a home for future generations.

Regeneration Project Expected to Create Thousands of Jobs

The proposed stadium forms part of a wider regeneration project expected to bring substantial housing and employment opportunities to the surrounding area.

The development is projected to deliver around 15,000 new homes, including affordable housing, and create approximately 48,000 jobs locally.

The wider project is also expected to generate more than 90,000 jobs nationally and contribute over £7 billion annually to the UK economy.

The club’s consultation is intended to help inform the stadium’s design as work continues on the wider development.
