Gor Mahia and KCB registered 1-0 victories over APS Bomet and Mathare United respectively, as Matchweek Two of the SportPesa Premier League continued on Saturday.
At Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, Gor Mahia needed a late goal to overcome a resilient APS Bomet side in a closely contested encounter. Alpha Onyango scored the decisive goal in the 84th minute to hand the record Kenyan champions all three points. Both sides defended well, limiting clear scoring opportunities before Onyango broke the deadlock late in the match.
The victory marked Gor Mahia's second win of the season following their 4-2 triumph over Murang'a Seals in their opening fixture on Tuesday.
The result strengthens Gor Mahia's early-season position as they seek to maintain their winning start and build momentum in the title race. APS Bomet, meanwhile, were left disappointed after a determined defensive display failed to earn them a point.
Meanwhile, at Police Sacco Grounds, KCB secured a narrow victory over Mathare United, with substitute Assis Mambote scoring the winner in the 85th minute, just 15 minutes after coming on. Mathare United created several scoring opportunities but couldn't convert. Veteran striker John Makwata came close to breaking the deadlock in the 60th minute when his curling effort from inside the box drifted wide.
Mambote's late strike proved decisive, handing Robert Matano's KCB their first win of the campaign after opening their season with a 2-2 draw against Nairobi United last Sunday.
Gor Mahia lead the SportPesa Premier League standings with six points from two matches, while KCB sit second with four.
Matchweek Two continues on Sunday with Kakamega Homeboyz facing Ulinzi Stars, Murang’a Seal taking on Posta Rangers and Shabana hosting Nairobi United.
The action continues on Monday, October 19, as
Mara Sugar face Mombasa United on Monday, while Bandari take on 3K FC. The second round concludes with Kenya Police hosting AFC Leopards at Police Sacco Stadium on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, SportPesa chief executive Ronald Karauri said the start of the season was important for clubs, players and fans, as well as the development of Kenyan football.
The league was delayed a month over a dispute on the promotion and relegation pitting top flight side Kariobangi and National Super League second runner ups Mombasa United.
“The return of the SportPesa League gives clubs, players and supporters the opportunity to focus once again on what matters most: exciting and competitive football. Through our 10-year partnership with FKF, we are helping bring greater stability to the domestic game and supporting the structures that enable clubs and players to thrive,” said Karauri.
He said the league would give emerging players opportunities to gain experience, showcase their abilities and advance their careers.
SportPesa launched its 10-year title sponsorship ahead of the 2025/26 season, with 60 per cent of the sponsorship funds distributed directly to clubs through the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
The partnership introduced monthly player and coach awards, improved broadcasts and media coverage, and a dedicated league website. It also provided Sh20 million in prize money for the top three clubs.
Beyond the league sponsorship, SportPesa has direct club partnerships with champions Gor Mahia, Murang’a SEAL and Shabana. Its league funding is intended to help clubs invest in players, technical benches and operations.
