Late drama as Stellies knock out Durban City

Stellenbosch FC emerged as 2-0 winners over Durban City in the 2026 Carling Knockout Round of 16 match at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Wednesday evening.

The late win saw Stellies advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face AmaZulu FC.

Before that, the Western Cape side will host Chippa United in the Betway Premiership on 31 October.

City, on the other hand, saw their dream of winning another cup trophy fade after last season’s Nedbank Cup success.

Coach Eric Tinkler’s side will travel to Mamelodi Sundowns in the league on 31 October.

The two teams arrived after three consecutive goalless draws in their previous meetings, and the first half was a tight, low-chance affair.

Eventual Man of the Match Siphamandla Ncanana looked solid at the back.

City lost Gaston Sirino to injury in the 16th minute; the ex-Kaizer Chiefs star had scored in each of their last two matches. Samkelo Maseko replaced him as the sides went into halftime still level at 0-0.

Stellies pushed for the opening goal after the restart and coach Gavin Hunt made changes in the 66th minute.

One of those changes was introducing Kazeem Adeyanju, who proved to be an inspired substitute.

Adeyanju’s perfect cross set up Sinoxolo Kwayiba for the opening goal in the 84th minute, stunning City fans into silence.

Kwayiba then netted again in stoppage time from another Adeyanju assist to seal Stellenbosch’s 2-0 win.
