Wayne Rooney's son Kai makes Man Utd U21s debut at 16 but it doesn't go well

Wayne Rooney's 16-year-old son, Kai, made his debut for Manchester United's Under-21s on Friday evening - though he was unable to stop them from suffering defeat. Rooney Jr entered the game as a 77th-minute replacement against Nottingham Forest in Premier League 2 for his first experience of competing at that level. He has been a regular at younger age levels for the club. The match at Loughborough University Stadium was level at 2-2 when Rooney stepped onto the pitch, but mere moments later Forest seized the advantage and ultimately secured all three points.

Kai is precisely the same age his father, Wayne, was when he burst onto the Premier League scene with a stunning strike for Everton against Arsenal, inspiring the legendary commentary: "Remember the name."

And the England legend's son has now progressed another stride towards representing United's senior side, something which appears unavoidable in future seasons.

Kai's inaugural outing for the U21s follows his introduction in the UEFA Youth League for United's U19s against Atletico Madrid, a fixture which similarly ended in defeat.

He has risen through the academy, having excelled for United's U16s during the previous campaign. He shared on Instagram ahead of his U21s debut with an image of his kit displayed in the changing room, writing: "U21s vs Forest."

Kai put pen to paper on a two-year academy apprenticeship with United in July, which is set to transition into a three-year professional contract worth approximately £50,000 a year.

United boss Michael Carrick's son, Jacey, is also part of the club's youth set-up.

Fuad Ayorinde Smith struck first to give Forest the lead in the youth fixture before United captain Dan Armer drew level from the penalty spot.

United then took the lead through Samuel Lusale, but Forest pulled level once more as Smith netted from the spot himself. Forest substitute Shakur Samuels grabbed the decisive goal.

Rooney Sr joined United for £30million in 2004 and netted a hat-trick on his debut in the Champions League. He went on to net a club record 253 goals across 559 appearances, lifting five Premier League titles in the process.
