Antonio Conte has reportedly emerged as a possible candidate to replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United following the club’s disappointing start to the season.
Reports suggest United have held discussions with Conte’s representatives, with the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager reportedly interested in taking charge if Carrick leaves.
The 57-year-old recently told The Athletic as reported by Mirror, that he would like to manage a club that has lost sight of its history and restore its former standing.
“I’d like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more,” Conte explained, describing his desire to compete for major honours.
Conte’s potential appointment could appeal to Ferguson, who spoke highly of the Italian after he guided Chelsea to the Premier League title in 2017.
Speaking to Sky Sports at the time, the legendary former United manager praised Conte’s energy and ability to shape his team’s identity.
“Fantastic, you see his energy on the pitch. There’s a true saying that the team mirrors the manager, and that’s what they’ve done with him,” Ferguson said.
Conte was also linked with the United job in 2021 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faced mounting pressure.
However, the club initially retained Solskjaer, allowing Conte to take charge of Tottenham instead.
For now, Carrick remains in charge as United prepare to face Leeds United on Sunday.
The manager has also dealt with controversy surrounding Lisandro Martinez, who criticised the club’s ambition following the Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid before issuing a statement clarifying his remarks.
Martinez is expected to be available against Leeds after reportedly holding positive discussions with Carrick and club officials.
Although reports suggest the defender has been fined, United are not expected to announce disciplinary action publicly.
With Carrick under pressure and Conte linked with the vacancy, the coming weeks could prove important for United’s managerial future. However, no appointment has been confirmed.
