Michael Carrick’s days at Old Trafford appear to be numbered, with reports indicating that the English manager’s sacking is imminent following a disastrous 3–0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The crushing loss not only extended the club’s recent struggles but also marked an alarming new low for the Red Devils, who sit 16th in the Premier League table after securing just a single victory in their opening eight league fixtures.
“There is a widespread expectation that Michael Carrick will lose his job in the next 24 to 48 hours,” Sky Sports reporter Jack Dorset reported on Sunday. “The frustration with results has now reached a tipping point. I have been speaking to a couple of insiders, and I have been told there is a distinct feeling within the club that Carrick will lose his position.”
Reports suggest that senior Manchester United officials have called an emergency meeting in the wake of the 3–0 setback, with the manager’s future topping the agenda. The under-fire boss has faced fierce criticism following a dismal run that has handed United their worst start to a league season in 70 years.
Speaking after the match, the tactician took full responsibility for the performance while remaining candid about his uncertain future, stating that everyone will simply have to wait and see what decisions emanate from the board in the coming days.
“I take the responsibility, of course. I accept the responsibility—whatever is going to happen results-wise, whether we win, lose, or draw, whatever happens—what else can I really say?” Carrick stated.
“What is next, I really do not know. But I always do what is best for this football club and I do not change that now. I love what I do, I love the position I am in, and I feel the responsibility, but we will have to wait and see.”
The heavy defeat capped off a dismal week in which United conceded seven goals across two matches, extending their winless run to seven games across all competitions.
Parting ways with Carrick would mark United’s third managerial dismissal in just three seasons, signalling yet another turbulent turn in Manchester United’s infamous post-Alex Ferguson managerial merry-go-round.
The former Middlesbrough manager arrived at Old Trafford in January 2026 as an interim replacement following the sacking of Rúben Amorim, who had himself succeeded Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was dismissed in October 2024 following a two-and-a-half-year reign.
Carrick’s initial arrival proved to be a major turning point last term. He steered the squad through a mid-season resurgence and guided the club back into the UEFA Champions League following a two-year absence, a feat that earned him a permanent contract ahead of the 2026–27 campaign.
However, that momentum has evaporated rapidly, leaving the Old Trafford hierarchy on the verge of pulling the trigger once again.
Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are expected frontrunners if the head coach leaves Old Trafford.
