Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero has recalled his first meeting with Football Kenya Federation Vice President and former Harambee Stars captain McDonald Mariga in 1999 at the famous Kamukunji High School in Nairobi.

Speaking on the Offsidewithoboya&Ade podcast, the MP, in an interview posted on Instagram on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, said Mariga joined Kamukunji High School in 1999 as a form one, whereby he was assigned the water boy duties for the benefit of the senior school team that boasted too much talent, and that Mariga could not break through to the first team.

“Mariga came as a form one in 1999, a tall boy but polite. Our first assignments with him was in Machakos, I said we should travel with him a water boy, because he was promising,” he said.

Mariga’s early career

Mariga started his playing career at Ulinzi Stars before moving first to Tusker and then to Kenya Pipeline while still at school. He was a member of the Kamukunji High School ‘Golden Boys’, which also included Kenyan striker Dennis Oliech (Auxerre, France), who won two consecutive National Championships in 2002 and 2003.

The central midfielder went to Sweden in 2005 to play for third Division side Enköpings SK. After only one season at ESK, he signed for Helsingborgs IF before the 2006 season. His success at Helsingborgs was immediate. Following initial interest from Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, Mariga looked set to sign for the Premier League team, but work permit issues held up the deal.

He moved to the Serie A club Parma initially on loan in August 2007. Mariga played 35 times for Parma in Serie B during the 2008–09 season, scoring three times to help them back to Serie A for the 2009–10 season.

In January 2010, he was set to sign for English club Manchester City of the Premier League, but he failed to obtain a work permit.

On February 1, 2010, the last day of the transfer window, Mariga moved to Inter Milan in a co-ownership deal. In March 2010, Mariga became the first Kenyan to play in the UEFA Champions League, when he entered the field as a late substitute against Chelsea. Mariga retired from active professional football in September 2019 for politics.

Orero grooming talent

Apart from Mariga, Orero played a significant role in identifying and developing football talent in Kenya, having helped nurture players such as Dennis Oliech, Michael Olunga and Victor Wanyama.

Orero entered elective politics in 2022 after defeating former MP Imran Okoth in the Kibra parliamentary race on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket. Before joining Parliament, he had built a career in education, serving as a teacher and school principal.

Beyond the classroom, however, Orero established himself as an influential figure in school sports, particularly football, where his work helped provide a foundation for several players who went on to represent Kenya at the highest level.

During his time as a principal in various Nairobi secondary schools, he championed an approach that combined academic achievement with sporting development. He ensured that students had access to playing fields and organised sports programmes that allowed young athletes to develop their abilities.

Beginning in 1990, Orero served at Kamukunji High School, Upper Hill School, Lang’ata High School and Dagoretti High School. These institutions were among the schools associated with the development of football talent in Nairobi.

His leadership helped create opportunities for promising players to showcase their abilities, with some eventually establishing careers in professional football both locally and internationally.

Among the notable footballers associated with his talent development work are former Harambee Stars captains Dennis Oliech, McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama, as well as current Kenya international Michael Olunga.

Other players linked to his football development efforts include Andrew Oyombe, Jamal Mohammed, George Odhiambo, Francis Odhiambo, Geoffrey Kokoyo and Francis Ocholla.

Orero’s contribution to school sports earned him recognition within Kenya’s education and sporting sectors, culminating in his appointment as chairperson of the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA).

His involvement in sports was not restricted to football. He also contributed to the growth of basketball and netball, helping schools compete in national and regional tournaments as part of their coaching teams.

His sporting career included serving as secretary-general of the Nairobi Basketball Association, coaching Kenya’s national netball team and leading the Teachers Service Commission football team for more than a decade.

His experience across different sporting disciplines has given him a broad understanding of the challenges facing young athletes and the importance of providing structured opportunities for talent development.

Following his election as Kibra MP, expectations were high that Orero would use his experience in education and sports to support talented young people in the constituency.

His record in school sports offers a foundation for initiatives aimed at improving access to training facilities, strengthening grassroots competitions and helping promising athletes progress to professional levels.

For Kenyan football, Orero’s journey highlights the contribution that schools and dedicated educators can make in discovering and nurturing players who eventually go on to represent the country on the international stage.
