Rabat – Moroccan international goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has emerged as a strong contender for the 2026 Yashin Trophy, with impressive statistics placing him ahead of several leading European goalkeepers.
The Al Hilal goalkeeper is among ten nominees for the award, which recognizes the world’s best goalkeeper during the annual Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Bounou leads a selected group of six goalkeepers in save percentage and clean-sheet rate during the opening weeks of the 2026-2027 season.
The Moroccan goalkeeper has played eight matches for Al Hilal, totaling 720 minutes. During this period, he conceded only five goals, averaging 0.62 goals per match, according to Al Jazeera.
Bounou also saved 19 of the 25 shots he faced, recording an impressive 80% save rate, the highest among the six goalkeepers included in the report’s statistical comparison.
He maintained five clean sheets in eight appearances, giving him a clean-sheet rate of 62.5%.
These figures place him ahead of several major names competing for the Yashin Trophy, including Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, Arsenal’s David Raya, and Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Among Bounou’s closest competitors is Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who has also enjoyed a strong start to the season.
The Spanish international conceded five goals in seven matches and recorded a save percentage of 73.7%, stopping 14 of the 19 shots he faced.
Raya also maintained four clean sheets, representing 57.1% of his appearances.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois played nine matches, conceding nine goals while saving 29 of 38 shots.
The Belgian international recorded a save rate of 76.3% and kept two clean sheets during that period.
Donnarumma, another major contender, registered a 75% save rate after stopping 21 of 28 shots across seven appearances for Manchester City.
The Italian goalkeeper conceded seven goals and maintained three clean sheets.
Spain’s Unai Simon also features among the nominees. The Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper recorded a 72.7% save rate and four clean sheets in eight appearances.
Although Bounou leads these players in the selected statistical categories, the figures do not necessarily determine who deserves the award.
The quality of opponents, difficulty of shots, and performances in major competitions also play important roles when evaluating goalkeepers.
Bounou’s nomination comes after years of consistent performances at both club and international levels.
The Moroccan goalkeeper gained worldwide recognition during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he played a major role in Morocco’s historic journey to the semi-finals.
The Atlas Lions became the first African and Arab national team to reach that stage of the competition.
His performances during the tournament strengthened his international reputation and helped establish him among the world’s leading goalkeepers.
In 2023, Bounou finished third in the Yashin Trophy rankings, marking one of the most significant individual achievements of his career.
His experience in major international competitions remains an important part of his candidacy for the 2026 award.
However, the competition remains challenging, with Courtois, Raya, Donnarumma, and other nominees bringing strong records and experience at the highest level.
Courtois previously won the Yashin Trophy in 2022, while Donnarumma claimed the award in 2021 and 2025.
Bounou’s impressive start to the 2026-2027 season strengthens his case for the prestigious individual award.
His 80% save rate and five clean sheets demonstrate his importance to Al Hilal and highlight his consistency between the posts.
However, the Yashin Trophy considers more than statistical performances, with individual achievements, consistency, and contributions in major competitions also influencing the final decision.
With the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony scheduled for October 26 in London, Bounou will soon discover whether his performances are enough to secure the award.
A victory would mark another major achievement for the Moroccan international and further strengthen his place among the world’s leading goalkeepers.
