Fleetwood Town striker Aaron Loupalo-Bi says scoring in his side's win over reigning Premier League champions Arsenal has not sunk in yet.

The 20-year-old rolled Gunners defender Marli Salmon and fired the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Illan Meslier to give the Cod Army a shock first-half lead in Tuesday's Carabao Cup last-16 tie.

Viktor Gyokeres equalised early in the second half but Fleetwood scored all five of their penalties and had goalkeeper Jay Lynch to thank for saving Bruno Guimaraes' spot-kick as they advanced to the last-eight, where they will face either Everton or Newcastle at home.

"No, it hasn't really sunk in yet, it's still all an amazing experience," Loupalo-Bi told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"It's kind of hard to take it all in at the same time. It happened all fast. I saw the ball landing at my feet and I thought I've just got to take this opportunity. This might be the only chance I get in the game.

"Against a team like Arsenal, one of the best defences in the [Premier] league, we know chances are only going to come occasionally.

"Just seeing the ball enter the goal, I kind of just went blank for a second. I couldn't really believe it but this is what I've worked for.

London-born Loupalo-Bi is on a season-long loan from Fulham and spent last season on loan at Walsall.

The striker confirmed members of his family were in attendance at Highbury on Tuesday, having made a six-hour journey to witness a night which will go down in the town and club's history.

"They were more happy than me I think," Loupalo-Bi said. "After the match, my brother came, my friends came, and then I got a call from my mum and she was screaming.

"My brother was there and my friends travelled. They were on the pitch afterwards.

"My mum said 'Aaron, I'm really happy for you. Playing against Arsenal could be a one-time occasion, I'm just happy you took the chance that you got'."

Goalkeeper Lynch, 13 years Loupalo-Bi's senior, has been with the club since 2022.

Fleetwood's number one stayed with the club after their relegation to League Two in 2024 and has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the fourth-tier.

After head coach Matt Lawlor confirmed his players had not practiced penalties before their perfect display from the spot, Lynch said he was watching Guimaraes' body movement before getting down to his left to stop the Brazil international.

"I'm still on cloud nine, I can't believe it's real to be honest," Lynch told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"You save one or two [penalties], you're the hero. If you don't save it, no one really questions you.

"I just kind of went in with that mindset. We'd done the hard work getting them to penalties, and then it's like 'go on then, go and enjoy it'.

"I managed to get a read on his [Guimaraes'] body shape with the stutter as he's running up.

"And I thought, pick that side and go with it. As he's stuttered, and then he's stopped, he's kind of only facing that way.

"So, I took the cue off that and went with that. He could have mugged me off and gone the other way, but it was right on the night."

Fleetwood, currently 18th in League Two after 13 games, host Bristol Rovers on Saturday (15:00 GMT).
