Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has inspected the ongoing upgrading works at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.
In a statement following the inspection on Sunday evening, October 18, Murkomen said he was impressed by the pace and quality of the works being undertaken at the facility.
The CS noted that although the stadium is yet to be fully completed, the 15,000-seater facility is in good condition to host the national celebrations.
The inspection comes as preparations intensify for the annual Mashujaa Day event, which brings together national leaders, government officials and members of the public to honour Kenyans who have contributed to the country’s development and freedom.
Murkomen said the ongoing renovation is intended to bring the stadium up to international standards, with several modern facilities being incorporated into the project.
The upgrades include a modern football pitch, an improved running track, modern changing rooms, an expanded VIP pavilion and modern floodlighting.
These improvements are expected to enhance the stadium’s capacity to host major sporting competitions and national events while improving the experience of athletes, officials and spectators.
The expanded VIP pavilion and upgraded changing facilities are also part of efforts to improve the venue’s overall functionality as it prepares to host the national celebrations.
Murkomen further assured Kenyans that adequate security arrangements had been put in place to protect those attending the Mashujaa Day celebrations.
He urged members of the public to cooperate with security officers and observe the established safety guidelines throughout the event.
The CS’s remarks come as the government prepares to host the national celebrations in Eldoret, placing the city at the centre of this year’s Mashujaa Day activities.
While construction works are continuing, Murkomen expressed confidence that the stadium is in suitable condition to accommodate the celebrations.
The ongoing upgrades are also expected to leave Eldoret with an improved sports facility capable of supporting future sporting activities and other major public events.
Mashujaa Day is observed annually on October 20 to recognise the sacrifices and contributions of individuals who have played significant roles in Kenya’s history and national development.
