So, there are certainly encouraging signs that the Foxes’ fortunes will change under Martin, but there is still a narrative that the 40-year-old is out of his depth and difficult to warm to.

With that said, one of Martin’s former Southampton colleagues has spoken to The Athletic and revealed what he’s really like behind the scenes.

Russell Martin’s former Southampton colleague says he’s a ‘pleasure to work with’

If you were to scroll social media after a Leicester defeat or a Martin interview, you’d quickly be told a number of reasons why you should dislike the City boss.

However, those who work with Martin have a completely different view of him, and it seems the perception externally isn’t an accurate reflection of his character at all.

A Southampton employee who worked alongside him said: “(Martin’s) an excellent coach, hard-working, a nice guy, down to earth, a pleasure to work with and, while he could be stubborn and had an ego, you would have to go a long way to find a head coach who wasn’t those things.”

The Saints staff member also spoke about Martin’s charity work and praised him for making a difference with his foundation – which ‘works to impact positively upon the lives of children, young people and adults through football, education, health and improvement.’

Speaking in a press conference last month, the Leicester manager discussed how he’s being inaccurately portrayed in the media.

“Speak to the players and people I’ve worked with, and (then) people who have never seen it and have maybe watched a few clips of some bits, and it’s very different perception and reality.

“But I guess when you try do something that is a bit different to some, then it’s always there to be shot at.”

Ultimately, Martin will be judged by results on the pitch, and if he can gain promotion this season, that will go some way in rubbishing the narrative that he’s a poor manager and everything that comes with it.
