Arsenal have provided a compelling counterargument to former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s claim that teams generally need to score between 85 and 90 goals to win the Premier League.
Ten Hag recently argued that attacking output is a crucial requirement for teams seeking the English top-flight title. Speaking in an interview with The Athletic, the Dutchman explained that scoring targets form part of his approach to recruitment, performance analysis and building a winning team.
However, Arsenal’s remarkable 2025–26 campaign offered a different perspective. Under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners reportedly won the Premier League title after scoring just 71 goals, demonstrating how defensive organisation can help compensate for a lower attacking total.
Arsenal conceded only 27 goals throughout that campaign and recorded 19 clean sheets. Their ability to restrict opponents proved central to their success, challenging the idea that champions must consistently reach the 85-to-90-goal mark.
The comparison is particularly interesting because recent Premier League champions have often combined prolific attacks with solid defences. Ten Hag’s argument reflects that established trend, but Arsenal’s reported title-winning figures illustrate that there can be more than one route to success.
Arteta has previously stressed the importance of collective defensive responsibility, insisting that forwards and midfielders must contribute when their team does not have possession. His philosophy places considerable value on defensive actions alongside goals and assists.
Arsenal’s current campaign has continued to highlight that approach. According to the report, the Gunners had scored 13 league goals while conceding only five, maintaining one of the division’s strongest defensive records at the time of publication.
The numbers suggest that Arsenal’s title challenge is not built solely around attacking firepower. Their defensive discipline, organisation and ability to limit opponents have also been crucial.
Ultimately, Ten Hag’s scoring benchmark remains a managerial principle rather than an absolute rule. Arsenal’s reported figures demonstrate that a team’s overall balance not simply its goal tally can be decisive in a Premier League title race.
