Conte Could Make Man United Winners Again, but What Would the Club Have to Sacrifice?

Antonio Conte is reportedly open to taking charge of Manchester United if the club decides to part ways with Michael Carrick, but his potential arrival raises a difficult question that goes beyond trophies: how much control would the Old Trafford hierarchy be willing to give him?

The Italian is one of football’s most accomplished managers, having won league titles with Juventus, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Napoli, and his reputation for demanding the highest standards makes him an appealing option for a club desperate to return to the top.

However, Conte’s history also carries a warning that United cannot afford to ignore, because his time at previous clubs has sometimes ended in bitter disagreements with executives, public criticism of players and serious questions about the club’s direction.

His departure from Tottenham in 2023 was particularly explosive, with the manager publicly attacking the club’s culture and accusing his players of selfishness after a damaging draw against Southampton.

Conte’s frustration was not limited to the dressing room, as he also questioned the club’s leadership and its long-standing inability to win major honours consistently.

More recently, his departure from Napoli after a difficult end to the 2025-26 campaign again highlighted the importance of having a strong relationship between a manager and the people responsible for recruitment.

These experiences matter because Manchester United are already dealing with questions about recruitment, squad quality and the relationship between football leadership and the players.

Bringing Conte into that environment could produce an immediate improvement in standards, but it could also create another power struggle if the club is unwilling to meet his demands in the transfer market or give him sufficient authority over football decisions.

Conte is not the type of manager who quietly accepts a squad he believes is inadequate, and United would need to understand that his appointment could involve difficult conversations about player sales, recruitment priorities and the responsibilities of senior executives.

His tactical approach would also demand considerable commitment from the squad, with players expected to follow demanding instructions and adapt to a clearly defined system.

That could be exactly what United need after struggling to establish consistency, but the club must consider whether its current squad has the right profiles and mentality to execute his methods.

The danger Is that United could appoint Conte expecting instant success, only to become frustrated when he demands more investment or publicly challenges the club’s decisions.

Equally, Conte would have to recognise that modern football requires collaboration, and that building a successful project means working with a recruitment department rather than expecting every disagreement to be resolved on his terms.

United should therefore establish clear expectations before making any appointment, including the manager's authority, the recruitment process, the club’s financial limits and how disagreements will be handled privately.

If both sides can agree on those fundamentals, Conte could offer the discipline and winning mentality United have been searching for.

But if the club wants a manager who will accept its existing structure without challenging decisions, appointing a demanding figure like Conte could simply postpone the next crisis.

The real question Is not whether Conte can win trophies at Manchester United, but whether the club is prepared to make the compromises necessary to work with him without allowing another managerial relationship to end in bitterness.
