Mama Ida Odinga, widow of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has opened up about her football loyalties, saying her family roots decide whom she cheers for when Kenya's biggest rivals meet.
Speaking in an interview on Wednesday night, October 14, Ida said she follows both local and international football. She named Gor Mahia and English side Arsenal as her favourite teams. However, she was quick to point out that her loyalty changes when Gor Mahia face AFC Leopards.
"I am a football fan. Gor Mahia and Arsenal are my favourite. But it depends. When AFC is playing, I support AFC. Because I am half Luhya half Luo," she explained.
She said her mother is a Luhya from Khwisero in Kakamega County, while her father is a Luo from Gem in Siaya County. That mixed heritage, she said, gives AFC Leopards the edge whenever the Mashemeji Derby comes around.
Her background ties her to the two communities historically linked to the clubs. Gor Mahia, popularly known as K'Ogalo, has strong backing among Luo fans, while AFC Leopards, often called Ingwe, has long drawn much of its support from the Luhya community. Even so, both teams have followers across the country, and their meetings bring together fans from all walks of life.
The Mashemeji Derby is one of the most celebrated contests in Kenyan sport. It is known for passionate crowds and a rich history that goes beyond what happens on the pitch.
Ida's comments offer a personal view of the rivalry, showing how family identity can shape the way a person supports a team, even one who admires both sides. Her love for Arsenal also reflects the wide following the English Premier League enjoys among Kenyan fans.
For Ida, the derby presents a pleasant dilemma. She enjoys watching Gor Mahia, yet her Luhya blood pulls her towards Ingwe on match day. Her remarks remind many fans that football loyalty is often shaped as much by roots and family as by results on the field.
