Chelsea Football Club have released an official medical update confirming that star goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw following a severe collision during Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
The Argentine international was involved in a sickening clash of heads with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite midway through the second half, leading to a ten-minute stoppage while medical personnel attended to both players on the pitch.
Martinez was treated with oxygen and stretchered off before being transported directly to a specialist hospital facility for comprehensive scans and emergency evaluations.
Medical assessments confirmed a facial bone fracture requiring corrective surgical intervention, which was successfully carried out with full support from Chelsea’s clinical medical team.
Taking to social media from his hospital bed following the procedure, the 34-year-old shot-stopper reassured supporters, giving a thumbs up and expressing gratitude for the overwhelming fan support.
Martinez highlighted that the most important outcome of the afternoon was Chelsea securing three valuable points alongside their first clean sheet in six matches since his summer move to Stamford Bridge.
With Martinez set for a multi-week recovery period, head coach Xabi Alonso will lean on Belgian youngster Mike Penders to take over starting duties between the posts.
Everyone at the club has extended their best wishes to the World Cup winner for a rapid and complete recovery as Chelsea enter a busy stretch of domestic and European fixtures.
