National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has highlighted the importance of supporting grassroots sports after facilitating the payment of participation fees for local football teams competing in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Division Two, County and Regional Leagues.
Ichung’wah said investing in sports and talent development is essential for nurturing young people’s abilities, creating opportunities and empowering the next generation. His support is intended to ease the financial burden on participating teams and allow players to concentrate on improving their performance.
Participation costs can present challenges for grassroots football clubs, which often operate with limited resources. By helping teams meet these expenses, Ichung’wah is seeking to create an environment where players can develop their skills and compete without the additional pressure of participation fees.
The legislator also emphasised that developing sports requires more than constructing stadiums and other sporting facilities. In his view, investment in infrastructure must go hand in hand with practical support for local teams and emerging athletes.
Such an approach can help young footballers gain competitive experience, improve their abilities and pursue opportunities to play at higher levels. Grassroots leagues also provide an important platform for identifying promising players who could eventually progress to more competitive stages of the sport.
Ichung’wah maintained that young people possess considerable talent, but they need the right environment to turn their potential into meaningful achievements. Financial support, access to facilities and opportunities to compete can all contribute to building a stronger sporting culture.
His remarks place renewed attention on the role of community-level investment in developing Kenyan football. While major sporting events and professional clubs often attract significant attention, local leagues remain important to the development of players who aspire to advance their careers.
The initiative also reflects the broader need for partnerships between leaders, football administrators, communities and other stakeholders to make grassroots sports more accessible and sustainable.
However, continued investment and transparent support will be important in ensuring that more teams benefit and that young players have opportunities to progress.
