Saka’s Injury Has Opened the Door for Madueke and Eze, but Can They Handle Schedule Demands

Bukayo Saka’s worrying injury against Bayern Munich created an unexpected opportunity for Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze to establish themselves as key figures in Arsenal’s attack, but Mikel Arteta must now find a way to protect his remaining options from the physical demands of a congested fixture schedule.

Saka was forced off after just 10 minutes during Arsenal’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Bayern, with Arteta admitting that the initial signs were concerning and that the club needed further medical assessments before determining the severity of the injury.

With Christos Tzolis also sidelined, Arsenal face a difficult period in which Madueke and Eze could be asked to shoulder a greater attacking responsibility across the Premier League, Champions League and domestic cup competitions.

For Madueke, this is an opportunity to prove that he can offer more than occasional flashes of brilliance from the bench.

The former Chelsea winger has already shown that his direct running, willingness to take on defenders and ability to attack space can give Arsenal a different dimension, particularly when opponents sit deep and make it difficult to create clear-cut chances.

His match-winning contribution against Nottingham Forest further strengthened his case, while his performance against Bayern demonstrated that he can contribute even when Arsenal are facing elite opposition.

However, replacing Saka’s overall influence will not be straightforward, because the England international offers consistent decision-making, creativity and a goal threat that few players in the squad can replicate over an entire season.

Madueke must therefore demonstrate greater consistency in his final ball and decision-making if he is to convince Arteta that he can be trusted as a regular starter rather than simply an exciting alternative.

Eze, meanwhile, has an opportunity to strengthen his position after making an immediate impact against Bayern, where he came on for Saka and scored Arsenal’s opening goal.

His creativity and ability to operate between the lines could prove particularly valuable when Arsenal need someone capable of unlocking compact defensive formations.

Unlike Madueke, who often looks to attack defenders directly, Eze can drift into central areas, combine with the midfielders and create opportunities through his close control and movement.

That difference could give Arsenal a useful balance, provided Arteta finds the right positions for both players and avoids making his attack too predictable.

The biggest concern, however, is whether they can sustain their performances when the fixtures begin arriving in quick succession.

Arsenal have several important matches approaching, including Premier League commitments, domestic cup football and further European action, leaving Arteta with limited time to recover his players between games.

If Noni Madueke and Eze are expected to start almost every match, fatigue could eventually affect their sharpness, decision-making and ability to press effectively.

There is also the risk that another injury could leave Arsenal dangerously short of natural wide options, particularly while Tzolis remains unavailable.

This is where Arteta must demonstrate the value of his squad depth by giving younger players such as Max Dowman carefully managed opportunities rather than relying exclusively on the same two attackers.

Rotation would not necessarily undermine Madueke or Eze’s status; instead, it could help them maintain the intensity required to perform at the highest level throughout the campaign.

Ultimately, Saka’s absence is a major setback, but it also gives two ambitious players the chance to prove that they deserve more responsibility at Arsenal.

Madueke and Eze have the quality to make the most of this opportunity, but their success will depend not only on their individual performances, but also on how intelligently Arteta manages their workload.

If the manager gets that balance right, Arsenal could emerge from this difficult period with greater confidence in their attacking depth; if he gets it wrong, the club may discover just how difficult replacing Saka really is.
