The Kenyan government has expressed confidence that ongoing construction works at Talanta Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, will be completed within the agreed timelines as preparations continue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya gave the assurance on Tuesday during consultations with contractors, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) engineers and Confederation of African Football (CAF) officials at the two facilities.

The meetings focused on assessing construction progress, identifying outstanding works and reviewing compliance with infrastructure requirements for the continental tournament, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

The government's assurance comes amid unconfirmed reports that CAF is considering alternative hosts for the competition, raising questions about the readiness of the three East African nations.

However, CAF president Patrice Motsepe has previously expressed confidence that Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will be ready to stage the tournament successfully.

In a statement, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said the latest consultations were intended to improve coordination among the agencies and teams responsible for delivering the stadium projects.

“The CS underscored the importance of sustained inter-agency collaboration and structured stakeholder consultations in addressing emerging challenges, resolving implementation bottlenecks, and ensuring the timely delivery of the projects,” Mwangi said.

According to Mwangi, the discussions were also expected to strengthen accountability, align the work of different stakeholders and sustain progress towards completing the facilities.

He added that Mvurya had acknowledged the progress recorded at both stadiums and remained confident that the outstanding works would be finished within the agreed schedules.

The two stadium projects remain central to Kenya's preparations for the 2027 AFCON, which will be jointly hosted by the three East African countries.
