Wayne Rooney has accused current man United players of prioritising their personal interests over the club as tensions mount following their 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
The former United captain believes the public disagreements involving Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez point to a growing problem with accountability at Old Trafford, warning that further confrontations could damage relationships within the dressing room.
Speaking on The United Stand podcast, Rooney said Martinez's earlier criticism of the club hierarchy had been the beginning of a worrying pattern, which intensified when Fernandes questioned the coaching staff's tactical approach against Como.
"When Martinez came out, I said this is an absolute nightmare because it will rip the dressing room apart," Rooney said.
"That was the start. We've seen it now with Bruno and you're going to see it with more players because they don't want to take responsibility."
Rooney argued that players must accept responsibility for performances on the pitch instead of allowing disagreements over tactics or club decisions to overshadow their own contributions.
He was particularly critical of the squad's attitude, claiming some players were too quick to shift blame when circumstances did not favour them.
"These players, they're selfish. They don't care about their team-mates, don't care about the manager, the staff or the fans, they care about themselves," he added.
The former striker also compared the players' conduct to that of children who react badly when things do not go their way.
He has urged them to examine their own performances rather than direct criticism towards others.
Fernandes attracted scrutiny after questioning United's tactical approach following the heavy loss in Italy.
