Catholic running back Jayden Miles was ready to make a statement against Zachary.

Two years ago, Miles scored seven touchdowns against the Broncos at Zachary. He nearly repeated his historic 2024 performance, torching Zachary for 205 yards rushing and six touchdowns on just 10 carries Friday.

Miles’ big game helped Catholic (4-3) win 70-38 against Zachary at Zachary High. The Bears rolled up 684 yards of offense in the win, which was their third straight.

“Consistency is just the word that jumps out to me,” Catholic coach Hudson Fuller said about Miles. “A big part of our bounce back this season is his personal response.”

The senior running back knew he could have a huge game against Zachary.

“On the bus, I was getting goosebumps,” Miles said. “I’m like, ‘This is going to be a big one for us.’ ”

Catholic quarterback Camden Estep completed 10 of 14 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Jude Chamberlain caught five passes for 135 yards. He also caught both touchdown passes.

The game became a shootout in the first half after Catholic took a 20-7 lead early. Miles opened the scoring with a 25-yard run. After Zachary’s Jeremey Patton answered with a 28-yard touchdown run, Catholic scored on consecutive possessions. Estep found Chamberlain, who dragged a defender into the end zone for a 16-yard score.

Miles later found a hole for a 75-yard touchdown run.

Zachary (4-3) and Catholic traded scores in the second quarter. Patton scored from 1 yard out to trim the deficit to six points. Estep found Chamberlain over the top for a 63-yard gain that set up a 2-yard Miles touchdown run.

Patton added two rushing scores in the quarter from 25 and 52 yards out. Estep threaded the needle on a 21-yard score to Chamberlain, and Graham Nassif hit a field goal to help Catholic hold a 33-28 lead.

Two turnovers late in the first half helped Catholic begin to pull away. Zachary quarterback Jacori Platt threw a pick to Howard Beach.

On the first play of the ensuing drive, Greg Williams found space along the sideline and ripped off a 77-yard touchdown run. Zachary fumbled a handoff on the next drive, which led to a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Miles.

The Bears led 49-31 at the half. The teams combined for 53 points in the second quarter alone.

Patton scored from 3 yards out to start the third quarter, but the score would be Zachary’s last. He finished with five rushing touchdowns in the loss.

Miles scored a 49-yard rushing touchdown after a failed onside kick. The Broncos tried to keep up, but Platt had a pass tipped into the hands of a Catholic defender to end the drive in Bears’ territory.

Miles scored a 14-yard touchdown on the ensuing drive. Williams added a 21-yard touchdown late in the third to make it 70-38 after a Zachary turnover on downs.

“To me, just did a great job of staying persistent throughout the game,” Fuller said. “Riding the wave a little bit there and finishing out there.”
