Lovemore powers to historic gold

The victory came after travel delays left Lovemore without essential equipment until the eve of the final, according to team reports.

Airline baggage issues delayed his custom seat and footrest arrival on time, forcing him to compete in his preliminary heats using an unfamiliar, temporary setup.

The missing parts arrived late on Thursday night. Lovemore installed the fittings on Friday morning before testing the boat during a brief pre-race warm-up.

"Not having my regular setup made qualifying uncomfortable, but once the equipment was back in place, I could concentrate fully on the race plan."

"To finish ahead of Mads and Fernando on this stage is massive, particularly after the frustration with the gear before the heats," Lovemore said.

Lovemore crossed the line in 11:20.92, finishing 2.54 seconds ahead of Denmark’s Mads Brandt Pedersen (11:23.46) and 3.53 seconds clear of defending champion Fernando Pimenta of Portugal (11:24.45).

Singe grinds her way to bronze

South Africa picked up a second medal on the opening day through Georgia Singe, who claimed bronze in the Women’s Under-23 K1 distance event.

Speaking after her race, Singe revealed that a difficult start forced her to fight back from behind before securing her spot on the podium.

"It definitely wasn’t easy. I was worried on the start because I was off the line, but I knew from training back home that I had a grind in me, so I just grinded back up as best I could to the front three," Singe said.

After breaking away in a leading pack of four paddlers, Singe managed her positioning through the final stages to guarantee a top-three finish.

Singe completed the six-lap, five-portage course in 1:47:32.93, finishing behind Slovakia’s Romana Svecova (1:47:26.19) and Denmark’s Sophie Hansen (1:47:32.04).

For Lovemore, the short-race victory adds a premier individual senior marathon title to his international record.

The KwaZulu-Natal paddler previously won the Under-23 world marathon title in 2019 and earned a senior world championship gold medal in the men's K2 alongside Andy Birkett in Ponte de Lima in 2022.
