Zimbabwe Women Cricket win

Fresh off their T20I leg in Raipur, the Zimbabwe Women’s cricket team transition to 50-over cricket as they take on India Women in a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series starting Friday, 23 October 2026, at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara.

The upcoming fixture carries extra weight: it forms part of the ongoing ICC Women’s Championship (2025–2029) cycle, marking Zimbabwe’s maiden campaign in the global league that directly determines qualification for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

With the 1st ODI set for 10:30 Central Africa Time (10.30am CAT), the Lady Chevrons enter the series looking to build on their recent milestone performances on the international stage. The other two matches are on 25 and 28 October.

Riding Momentum From Historic Breakthrough

While facing third-ranked India (and reigning World Champions in the format) in their own backyard presents a massive hurdle, the Lady Chevrons bring valuable self-belief from their recent home series against the West Indies.

In late September, Zimbabwe made history at Harare Sports Club by claiming their first-ever victory in the ICC Women’s Championship – a dramatic four-wicket triumph over the West Indies set up by Nyasha Gwanzura’s remarkable 4/33.

That maiden win proved that Zimbabwe can translate developmental progress into tangible results against established ICC Full Member opposition.

Captain Josephine Nkomo will rely heavily on her core group of performers to lead the charge. All-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu, middle-order campaigner Sharne Mayers – who top-scored for Zimbabwe in the T20I series – and seamers Gwanzura and Nomvelo Sibanda will be vital in ensuring Zimbabwe can stay competitive across 50 overs.

India’s 50-Over Powerhouse

India enter the ODI leg with a formidable squad boasting extensive 50-over experience and depth. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, the hosts feature top-order star Shafali Verma, versatile all-rounder Deepti Sharma, and returning seam bowler Renuka Singh.

Playing on home soil in Vadodara, India will aim to consolidate their position near the top of the ICC Women’s Championship table with disciplined, multi-dimensional cricket.

Having won their world cup title at home, the comforts put them in the box-office seat to claim another clean sweep, after achieving the same in the WT20I format.

Tactical Battlegrounds

  • Pacing the 50-Over Batting Innings: Transitioning from T20 sprint mode to 50-over stamina is Zimbabwe’s primary task. Building partnerships around Mayers, Ndhlovu, and Beloved Biza to bat deep into the 50 overs will prevent collapses against India’s tight bowling.
  • Middle-Over Spin Warfare: Deepti Sharma and India’s slow bowlers will aim to apply continuous squeeze during overs 11-40. Zimbabwe’s batters must rotate strike consistently to keep the scoreboard moving without taking unnecessary risks.
  • New-Ball Seam Execution: The initial 10-over powerplay with the new ball will be crucial for Zimbabwe’s bowling unit. The lead bowlers must replicate their disciplined lengths from the West Indies victory to disrupt Mandhana and Verma early.

As Zimbabwe continue their debut journey in the ICC Women’s Championship, every point and competitive display against top-tier opposition represents another vital step in closing the international gap.

Zimbabwe Women Squad:

Josephine Nkomo (C), Beloved Biza, Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, Kelis Ndhlovu, Michelle Mavunga, Francesca Chipare, Olinder Chare, Kudzai Chigora, Nyasha Gwanzura, Nomvelo Sibanda, Loryn Phiri, Chiedza Dhururu, Modester Mupachikwa, Tendai Makusha, Sharne Mayers.
