Liverpool are reaping the rewards of their long-term plan to sign Rio Ngumoha

Seeing Rio Ngumoha play for the first time was a special moment, but weirdly, it’s happened again and again lately.

Ngumoha scored a beautiful winner for Liverpool on his Premier League debut in a 3-2 thriller against Newcastle United on the opening day of last season.

Dominik Szoboszlai dummied a pass from Mohamed Salah, setting the teenager up for a moment that probably most every football fan has dreamed of. Ngumoha finished the chance perfectly, to mark his first-ever professional game of football with a goal and a winner in extra time.

That goal promised that we would see more sensational moments like that, but between Liverpool’s poor form and Arne Slot’s reticence to overplay him (which is praise, by the way), Ngumoha stalled slightly between the start of the 2025/26 season and the end.

However, the start of this season also came with a new manager. Andoni Iraola has done what we all hoped he would so far. He’s restored identity, fighting spirit and passion ot hte Reds.

More than all that, he’s making good on his promise to place his faith in youth talent, with Lewis Koumas and Rio Ngumoha both starring in the 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday.

It was the fourth time that Ngumoha has played on the right wing for the Reds, and it was arguably his performance of the season. The maturity and composure he showed really impressed me. More and more, it’s becoming so obvious why Liverpool turned his head to leave Chelsea and London for Merseyside.

Seeing him play out of position has almost felt like watching him for the first time again. He’s a different player entirely on the right. His game is far more direct, as he doesn’t have to cu

His 38 minutes against Brentford were quite astonishing, actually.

Besides the improved decision-making and learning when to fly forward and when to hold possession, his stats tell the story:

  • 1 shot
  • 4.7km covered
  • 31.3km/h top speed
  • 8 sprints
  • 22 touches
  • 3 successful dribbles
  • 14 carries
  • 1 successful cross
  • 90 pass accuracy (90%)
  • 4 ball recoveries
  • 5 out of 5 ground duels
  • 1 foul

All this in less than 40 minutes for an 18-year-old playing out of position is incredible.

Speaking after the game, Ngumoha spoke about improving and learning a lot lately.

“I feel like I’ve got a lot better playing there from the Newcastle game until now,” he said, per the Athletic.

“I’m understanding it more. Going away with England helped a lot as well. I like playing on both sides. It gives me another tool in the toolbox.”

Patience is needed, but Liverpool have a long-term plan

When the club spent £123m to sign Bradley Barcola in the summer, one of the big sub-questions asked was: ‘What does this mean for Ngumoha?’

Firstly, a club like Liverpool cannot unfortunately centre its plans around a teenager.

That said, Ngumoha is now learning to become an elite right-winger in addition to the inevitable reality that he will be one of the very best on the left flank over the next decade.

When Liverpool infuriated Chelsea by turning Ngumoha’s head, the promise was a guaranteed pathway to the first team and regular game time.

The promise was not to make him the future best left-winger, but to get him into the senior setup, playing against seasoned pros with the view to making him the future of the club’s attack.

Liverpool didn’t sign an elite left-winger this summer, although rumours are starting about Olise to Anfield, and I do wonder if the reason was to give Ngumoha more scope to work with. They did sign Victor Munoz, but the two forwards are sharing game time on the left, particularly until Cody Gakpo is ready to start.

Patience will be needed, however, as there are still several years before Ngumoha reaches his peak powers.

For now, all that is important is Ngumoha learning and training wit the best, keeping him fit and healthy, and his relationship with Andoni Iraola.

The Spaniard is a miracle worker with young players, so there is no stress about how things will work in that regard.
