One of the biggest high school football games of the year involves two teams ranked in the top 10 in the latest Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 high school football poll.

The Sweet 16, which began in 1984, ranks the top teams in the media company’s coverage area, which currently includes schools from Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union counties.

This week, No. 4 Chambers visits No. 10 Mallard Creek in a regular-season finale that will determine the Meck Power Six conference champion.

Chambers, led by second-year coach and former Carolina Panther Captain Munnerlyn, is looking for a perfect 10-0 regular season and its first conference title in five years.

Mallard Creek lost back-to-back games to top-5 nationally ranked Buford (GA) and to Myers Park in early September. Since then, the Mavericks are 5-0 and have only allowed one team to score more than eight points in a game.
