Victor Osimhen will face his former club, Lille, when Galatasaray visit France today, with both sides seeking their first points in the UEFA Champions League.
The Nigeria striker returns to familiar surroundings after scoring 18 goals in 38 appearances for Lille during the 2019/2020 season before moving to Napoli. He also scored his first Champions League goal against Chelsea while playing for the French club in October 2019.
Osimhen will be expected to lead Galatasaray’s attack as they seek to revive their campaign after defeats to Sporting CP and Barcelona. Lille are equally desperate for a response following losses to Real Betis and Arsenal. They suffered a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal last week, having earlier lost 3-2 at home to Betis.
However, the French side will fancy their chances at the Decathlon Arena, having won two and drawn one of their last three home matches. Galatasaray’s poor away record in Europe is another concern for manager Okan Buruk’s side.
They have lost eight of their last nine away matches in European competitions and have also lost four of their last six visits to Ligue 1 clubs, drawing the other two.
Lille will look to exploit those weaknesses, but they must avoid a repeat of their defensive lapses against Betis. Osimhen’s knowledge of his former club could prove valuable, although Galatasaray will need a disciplined team performance to secure a positive result.
