RC Vannes sits at the bottom of the Top 14 standings with just a single point after six matches, leaving club captain Francisco Gorrissen to confront a daunting fight for survival as the team prepares to face ASM Clermont Auvergne at Stade de la Rabine.
Entering the seventh round of France’s premier rugby competition, the newly promoted Breton club finds itself facing a stark numerical deficit. Vannes trails the fourteenth-place team, Castres, by eight points, having failed to secure a single victory since earning promotion to the Top 14. Yet, statistical analysis of their opening fixtures reveals a margin for optimism amid the struggle: the team has lost five separate matches by fewer than ten points, maintaining an average losing margin of 9.8 points across their first six outings.
Speaking in an interview, Francisco Gorrissen acknowledged the severity of the club’s position while rejecting the notion that a defeat against Clermont would mathematically seal their relegation. “This championship is very, very long,” Gorrissen said, balancing the immediate urgency with the marathon nature of the season. “On the other hand, I want to answer yes because we really need victories. We know well that we must turn the corner, launch the season in terms of points.”
Vannes manager Jean-Noël Spitzer, recently honored at the Nuit du Rugby à Olympia alongside his coaching staff, maintains that the club will not alter its fundamental preparation despite the winless streak. However, players within the squad have voiced frustration over being perceived as too accommodating by their opponents. Winger Nathanaël Hulleu remarked after a 21-12 defeat to Perpignan that the squad is tired of being labeled the “nice little team of Vannes,” a sentiment echoed by leadership within the locker room.
Gorrissen emphasized that bridging the competitive gap requires a mental shift rather than a complete tactical overhaul. “The rugby is a very, very mental sport too, not just physical,” Gorrissen said. “Sometimes it’s just the mental, how we go into contact… I don’t want to say that we lacked it, but just that we must put a little more still because it’s a ruthless championship.” The captain called on his teammates to bring “a little madness” to the pitch and shed their polite reputation to command greater respect from established Top 14 opponents.
Opposing Vannes on Saturday is an ASM Clermont Auvergne side experiencing its own early-season turbulence. Under Christophe Urios, Clermont enters the fixture with only two victories in seven matches and three consecutive defeats, placing severe pressure on the Auvergne club to rectify its offensive inefficiencies. Despite controlling possession and territory in recent weeks, Clermont has struggled to convert scoring opportunities in the opposition red zone.
Clermont’s squad management received a mixed update ahead of the trip to Brittany. The visitors will welcome back Pita-Gus Sawokula, Giorgi Dzmanashvili, Lucas Zamora, and Marcos Kremer, who returns from suspension. However, the squad remains depleted by a long injury list that includes Selevasio Tolofua, Cristian Ojovan, Tevita Ratuva, Pio Muarua, Thomas Ceyte, Baptiste Veschambre, Etene Nanai-Seturo, Alivereti Raka, Etienne Fourcade, and Régis Montagne, the latter sidelined for several weeks with a calf muscle tear sustained against UBB.
Saturday’s encounter at Stade de la Rabine will also feature Vannes competing in their pink jerseys for “La Vannetaise.” Gorrissen noted that the special kit provides a tangible psychological lift for the squad. “It’s special, the city really feels it,” Gorrissen said, highlighting the active participation of local supporters who purchase the pink jerseys to back the team. “Every year I try to participate in the race… and each time we play in the pink jerseys, the supporters make the effort to buy them.”
With Jean-Noël Spitzer stressing that the club cannot afford to lose ground against direct rivals, Vannes enters the weekend facing adverse weather forecasts that could demand tactical adjustments. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Stade de la Rabine, where the Breton club seeks its first win in the Top 14.
