Premier League clubs eye Sporting “gladiator” after impressive start in Portugal

Premier League clubs could be preparing to battle for one of European football’s emerging midfield talents after his impressive start to life in Portugal.

The 22-year-old has quickly established himself as a player to watch, attracting interest from England after making an impact for Sporting.

With his performances continuing to turn heads, a future move to the Premier League could become a possibility, although his current club are in a strong position to demand a significant fee.

Premier League Clubs Tracking Issa Doumbia after Sporting Breakthrough

According to Tuttomercatoweb, several Premier League clubs are monitoring Issa Doumbia after his impressive start at Sporting, with the midfielder’s growing reputation attracting attention from across Europe.

The Italian joined the Portuguese side from Venezia in a deal worth €20 million, plus a further €6 million in potential add-ons. Sporting have also secured his future until 2031, with an €80 million release clause set to become active next July.

Doumbia — described as a “gladiator” by Italian Football TV — arrived in Portugal after helping Venezia secure promotion to Serie A last season, registering eight goals and six assists. Those numbers highlighted his ability to contribute in the final third, while his physicality, ball-winning and forward runs have made him an attractive midfield prospect.

His early performances at Sporting have only strengthened that reputation. The midfielder scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 Champions League victory over Lens, underlining his ability to make an impact on the European stage. He has also earned opportunities with Italy, recently making his first start for the national team against Turkey.

The growing interest from the Premier League could present Sporting with a significant challenge if clubs decide to turn their admiration into formal offers. However, the Portuguese side are under little immediate pressure to sell, given the length of Doumbia’s contract and the substantial release clause included in his deal.

AC Milan are among the clubs who may regret missing out on the midfielder. Massimiliano Allegri and Igli Tare reportedly explored a move last April, viewing him as a potential addition capable of bringing energy, strength and quality to their midfield.

That move ultimately failed to materialise following changes at the Italian club, allowing Sporting to secure his signature. Allegri is also reported to have considered taking Doumbia to Napoli, but the opportunity came too late.

For the Premier League sides now keeping tabs on the Italian international, the timing of any approach could prove crucial. Sporting’s investment has already begun to look promising, and continued progress could push his valuation considerably higher.

With several English clubs reportedly monitoring his development, Doumbia is a name to watch ahead of future transfer windows. Whether any side is prepared to meet Sporting’s demands remains to be seen, but his rapid rise suggests interest in his services is unlikely to disappear.
