It was a thrilling night in the Champions League as Manchester City lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain. It was very much a game of two halves, though.
PSG were on fire in the first 45 minutes, as Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha all scored to give the French side a 3-0 lead. During the break, Enzo Maresca made three substitutions, and his team came out with real purpose.
Erling Haaland pulled one back, and with Man City on top, it looked as though a comeback could be on the cards. Just 10 minutes after his goal, however, Gianluigi Donnarumma's poor goalkeeping allowed Maghnes Akliouche to restore the away team's three-goal lead.
Haaland would score again to make it 4-2 but it wasn't enough to turn the tide. As such, Luis Enrique walked away with another win against an English team, and his post-game comments have now caused a bit of a stir.
PSG have a great record against English teams of late. Since losing to Arsenal at the start of the 2024/25 League Phase, Luis Enrique has gone unbeaten in all future games against Premier League opponents.
This includes beating the likes of Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and now Man City. PSG also got revenge on the Gunners, knocking them out of the past two Champions Leagues – which includes victory over Mikel Arteta's men in last season's final.
In the 2026/26 run, they put five goals past Spurs, four past Liverpool and eight against Chelsea. Luis Enrique's record against English teams in Europe with PSG is certainly impressive and the Spaniard made reference to it after his latest win over Man City, stating:
“I hope we continue playing against the English team... It's nice to come and see all of you."
It's fair to say the comments did not go down so well with many fans of Premier League football.
Angry supporters were quick to point out that Luis Enrique's PSG are seemingly advantaged as they can rest key players for Ligue 1 fixtures before taking on Champions League games. The perception is that the Premier League is too strong for managers to have that same luxury.
Man City, for example, took on Liverpool at Anfield over the weekend, while PSG picked up a 3-1 win at home against Le Mans. In that game, the likes of Willian Pacho, Marquinhos, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, Warren Zaire-Emery, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Doue all started on the bench, and Dembele didn't even make the squad.
On that topic, one angry fan said:
"Try playing Brighton on a weekend right after playing Brentford then bring that same team to the UCL!!!"
Another simply called it: "Very disrespectful." A third said: 'Bro will rest his full first 11 then act tough, the intensity of the league is why you are playing tired legs, sit that out sir, you can't rest your starting 11 against Everton."
One more added: "They need to be investigated for giving their best players holidays to rest and focus on the Champions League. They know exactly what they’re doing because, in the long run, they expect to win the league. How is this fair to the rest of us? This is daylight robbery disguised as squad management. It’s cheating man!"
