U18s match report: Late equaliser gains Liverpool a point against Leicester
U18s match report cover - 17/10/2026

Simon Wiles’ Reds held a half-time lead courtesy of AJ Yeguo’s goal, but the away side reversed the score through Bismark Owusu and Jake Fletcher.

In the closing stages of an U18 Premier League North contest crammed with opportunities, Haydn Murray-Holme struck the leveller.

Liverpool flashed the first threat of the even opening exchanges at the Kirkby Academy as Erik Farkas cut in from the right and sent a shot past the post.

Midway through the half, the Reds were grateful to the awareness and diligence of Cam Williams with a goalline clearance. Leicester capitalised on a loose pass to counter-attack and Fletcher was able to get in an effort that Williams denied.

Farkas again could have broken the deadlock immediately at the other end, though was off target having been teed up by Yeguo.

They did take the lead ahead of the half-hour mark, however. A misplaced pass from Leicester goalkeeper Henry Lawrence was seized by Yeguo, who moved past a defender and slotted in.

There was almost déjà vu within moments. Ellis Hickman cut out the ball this time but Farkas was unable to convert at the end.

The Reds earned a golden chance to double their advantage on 34 minutes as Yeguo’s drive into the box from Lucas Clarke’s pass was illegally halted.

Farkas stepped up to the penalty kick but sent his finish over the crossbar.

Chances continued to come freely for both teams, with Zak Coxon bringing a save out of Lawrence and Owusu dangerous for the Foxes.

Leicester got back on level terms just seven minutes into the second half.

Switched from the left wing to the right, Owusu’s efforts paid dividends as his jinking run preceded a composed strike to make it 1-1.

Farkas was frustrated once more as Liverpool sought to respond quickly to the equaliser, with Lawrence thwarting the midfielder.

Isaiah Garin’s important tackle foiled Fletcher next, only for he and the visitors to complete a turnaround in minute 71.

Owusu turned provider on this occasion as his low cross was guided in first-time by Fletcher.

The scorer was close to giving Leicester a third from a breakaway and a crucial block by Lenix Conde also prevented substitute Rollo Szembell from doing the same.

Liverpool were not done, though, and rescued a point with 84 on the clock.

Yeguo attacked the byline and cut the ball back for Murray-Holme, whose hit took a slight deflection before finding the target.

Both sides pressed on for a winner but neither produced it, with Clarke’s block foiling Leicester, an Owusu attempt going just wide, and Lawrence getting down low to save from Yeguo.
