49ers running back Christian McCaffrey got revenge against the Seattle Seahawks in Bruce Bolt's new tacky gloves after last season's costly drop, with some players asking if the gear could be banned
Christian McCaffrey's meeting with the Seattle Seahawks last season ended with him dropping the football at a crucial moment, but he got his revenge this season with a 32-29 win and gloves with grip so good that some players asked if they should be banned.
McCaffrey wore BRUCE BOLT's new BOLTGRIP gloves in San Francisco's 32-29 win over the Seahawks to stay a perfect 5-0 months after his costly January drop gifted the same NFL team last year's No. 1 seed on the way to a Super Bowl win.
He caught every pass Brock Purdy sent his way, racked up 68 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, and kept the ball glued to his hands all night.
Bruce Bolt says the material has the highest-rated tackiness allowed under SFIA standards, and its arm sleeve is the first tackified one approved, though McCaffrey wore only the new gloves.
The company also produced a BOLTGRIP arm sleeve with grip zones to the forearm and bicep, where a running back presses the football against his body after securing it.
According to the company, the answer is no. The sleeve meets the standard set for the 2027-28 season, and McCaffrey already rocked an all-white pair of the brand's Original Series gloves with tacified palms.
No glove can erase the sting of a season-defining drop, but he switched gloves after the January heartbreak.
San Francisco's NFC West hopes vanished when a tipped Purdy pass slipped through McCaffrey's hands and Seattle intercepted it to seal the game.
The 49ers running back apologized for not finishing the play, and the Seahawks went on to defeat the New England Patriots to win their second Super Bowl in franchise history.
"It's a play that I have to make," he said at the time. "[I] absolutely have to make [it]. [I] expect nothing less but to make that play. It's completely on me."
Eight months after that Seattle drop became a viral lowlight, McCaffrey returned with grip built into his hands and something to prove.
The 49ers running back has posted three NFL seasons with over 100 catches, caught 116 passes in 2019 with Carolina, and has over 550 career receptions.
Bruce Bolt entered football after the company became a regular presence in MLB stadiums and on the hands of the game's top stars.
Players including Fernando Tatis Jr., Ketel Marte, Harrison Bader, and others have worn custom baseball variants.
