Tottenham’s travelling fans have earned widespread praise, with former Aston Villa and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore describing them as the best away support of the season so far.

Tottenham Hotspur fans enjoyed their best weekend of the Premier League season so far as they watched their side run riot against London rivals Chelsea, securing a 2-0 victory.

Few supporters would have predicted such a result ahead of Saturday’s encounter given Spurs’ record at Stamford Bridge. Tottenham had only won once there in the last three decades, that solitary victory coming back in 2018.

However, Roberto De Zerbi masterminded a second triumph at the Bridge in what was only his second competitive outing against Chelsea as Tottenham boss.

Tottenham fans earn praise from Stan Collymore after Chelsea victory

The win meant everything to Spurs fans, who sang relentlessly from the away end as their side dominated the Blues and claimed their second victory of the season – and second Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge.

The chanting was constant, with the Lilywhites’ supporters eventually out-singing their London rivals. By the final whistle, Spurs fans were the loudest in the stadium, cheering their players after a spirited display.

Their backing has now earned praise from former Villa and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore, who took to X to commend them. He wrote: “Spurs away support the benchmark for away fans in the Premier League this season. 90 mins of consistent supporting the team. Chapeau.”

Spurs fans deserve their moment after last season’s struggles

Tottenham fans certainly deserve this moment given what they have endured in recent seasons. Last year, the Lilywhite faithful had little to cheer as they watched their side battle relegation.

This campaign also began poorly, with Spurs winless in their first six games. Yet despite the struggles, the supporters stuck by their team.

De Zerbi himself acknowledged how much the victory meant to the fans, praising their togetherness and spirit. He said: “It was a big moment for the Tottenham fans, the club and the players also. They deserved this win, they prepared very well. We are improving a lot, we are improving in the mentality, in the group and the relationships with the players and then we are improving on the pitch.

“Against Aston Villa, Everton for 30 minutes we were playing very well. Maybe no goals, no finishing good enough to score and maybe in the first bad moment we changed mentality. Now it is a complete team. The players are playing better, we improved in the style.

“When we stay for dinner and stay together in the dressing room I see a different group, a different relationship and different atmosphere among the players.

“The character was today great but we have many, many new players. The players who stayed here last season, two or three seasons ago, they suffered the last results, two times 17th position, we are working to change the last part of the history of the club. We are lucky because we have many great people in the dressing room, many great players. I think if we work hard we can do something important.

“I have to believe for sure in this group. I never lost the confidence in my players. The week in Marbella, to speak better face to face, to open ourselves and remove the mask it is important. It is important for the spirit, the belief. The atmosphere inside the dressing room is maybe more important than the tactics.”
