Another update on Emiliano Martinez has been delivered after he was stretchered off during Chelsea’s win over Everton in the Premier League.
On Saturday afternoon, Chelsea took on the unbeaten Toffees at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with David Moyes' side looking to continue their fine start to the campaign.
However, it was the away team who secured all three points, with Pedro Neto netting a brace to seal a much-needed 2-0 victory.
But the victory was marred by a serious injury suffered by Chelsea goalkeeper Martinez, who joined the club from Aston Villa during the summer transfer window.
The Argentine clashed with Everton man Jarrad Branthwaite after both players looked to get to the ball first following a cross that was swung into the Chelsea box, leaving both players on the ground.
Although Branthwaite got up unhurt, Martinez received lengthy treatment before being stretchered off by the medical team. The Argentine was replaced by Mike Penders.
Now, it has been reported by journalist Gaston Edul that Martinez will require surgery for a suspected jaw injury.
He wrote on social media: “Dibu Martínez is doing well and is conscious in the hospital. The results of the head tomography and the back and neck studies came back fine.
“He has a bone injury in the jaw and that's why he stayed in the hospital. The important exams went well for him. The lesser evil: he has a jaw injury and they're going to operate on him.”
Speaking after the match, Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso also gave a brief update on Martinez. He said: “As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious and right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests.
“So let’s see, but that’s what I know so far. We need to wait. Hopefully it won’t be too bad, but we need to wait at the moment.”
Meanwhile, match-winner Neto was quick to dedicate the win to Martinez during his post-game interview with TNT Sports.
Neto said: “We are really pleased. Shame for Emi, but we wish you all the best. This win is for him. We needed a clean sheet to be honest. I think we did a very good game.
“Emi deserved this, and this was to honour him. We know it's tough to play away, even at home there are no easy games. We came here with personality, with good intentions to win the match and really happy with the result.”
Looking ahead, Chelsea will be back in Premier League action next weekend when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby at Stamford Bridge.
