Real Madrid maintain perfect Champions League start as Yan Diomande makes decisive impact

Real Madrid continued their winning run in the UEFA Champions League with a convincing 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

The Spanish side were tested for much of the opening half but pulled clear after the interval, with Arda Guler and Kylian Mbappe extending their advantage before Yan Diomande completed the scoring late on. The result gives Real Madrid a third consecutive win in the competition.

RB Leipzig had created several promising opportunities before the visitors took the lead in the 43rd minute. Arda Guler’s effort was saved by Maarten Vandevoordt, but Bernardo Silva reacted quickest to the rebound and finished from close range.

Romulo Cardoso and Christopher Nkunku had both threatened for Leipzig during an evenly contested first half, yet Thibaut Courtois produced the important interventions required to keep Real Madrid in front before the break.

Real Madrid increased their advantage seven minutes after half-time. Jude Bellingham combined with Mbappe, who headed the ball into the path of Guler. The young Turkey international made no mistake with the finish to put the visitors 2-0 ahead.

Diomande was introduced in the 70th minute, replacing Vinicius Junior, and quickly became one of the central figures of the match. In the 83rd minute, the Ivory Coast forward set up Mbappe for Real Madrid’s third goal.

Leipzig responded two minutes later when Tidiam Gomis converted from Christoph Baumgartner’s service. The goal briefly reduced the deficit, but it did not threaten to change the outcome.

Diomande then restored Real Madrid’s three-goal lead in spectacular fashion in the 87th minute. After receiving a cross from Brahim Diaz, he sent a right-footed effort into the top-left corner.

The goal was particularly notable because Diomande was facing his former club. Having supplied one assist and scored another, he made a substantial contribution despite starting on the substitutes’ bench.

His performance ensured a memorable evening at the Santiago-Bernabeu, while Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory confirmed their strong start to the European campaign.
