Julian Alvarez apologised to Atletico Madrid supporters after scoring the goal that secured a 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, saying he understood why they had been angered by his expressed desire to play for Barcelona.
The Argentina striker struck for the second consecutive match as Atletico moved to within two points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona. He then addressed the comments that had damaged his relationship with supporters at the Metropolitano.
“I'd like to apologise to our fans for what I said at the World Cup; it was a mistake in terms of how I said it and the timing,” Alvarez told Spanish broadcaster Movistar Plus.
“I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I'd be angry too. Especially given how they've supported me since I arrived.”
Alvarez said during the 2026 World Cup that he “wanted to fulfil his dream” of playing for Barcelona. His comments led to a transfer dispute that continued through pre-season and the summer window, with Atletico refusing to sell him to their rivals.
The forward has regularly been booed at home this season, but some supporters gave him a standing ovation after his decisive goal against Deportivo La Coruna.
“I hope that with hard work and humility I can turn this situation around,” Alvarez said.
“I've been feeling better in recent matches - both physically and on the ball. I want to help the team and give my best.”
The result leaves second-placed Atletico on 25 points, two behind Barcelona.
Real Madrid are third on 21 points and travel to Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday for the first Clasico of the season.
