Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes have taken an important step towards repairing their relationship after tensions threatened to deepen Manchester United’s ongoing crisis.
The pair reportedly held clear-the-air talks at Carrington on Tuesday, following disagreements over the team’s tactics and Fernandes’ public criticism after the humiliating 4-1 defeat against Como.
The Portuguese midfielder questioned United’s approach, particularly their lack of pressing, after the European setback.
Four days later, Carrick left the captain out of his starting lineup against Bournemouth and did not introduce him during the 3-0 defeat.
Carrick described Fernandes’ omission as a “pure football” decision, although the timing fuelled speculation about tensions between the manager and his captain.
According to The Independent, Tuesday’s conversation could pave the way for Fernandes to return to United’s starting lineup when they face Chelsea on Saturday.
The discussions come after Carrick survived growing pressure over his position, with the club deciding against dismissing the 45-year-old following the Bournemouth loss.
Fernandes is reportedly showing signs of returning to his best after a difficult fortnight, potentially offering United an important boost as they attempt to recover from their disappointing results.
However, the midfielder has struggled for consistent attacking output this season.
He has failed to score in his last seven appearances, with his only Premier League goals coming in August when he netted a hat-trick against Ipswich.
Carrick selected summer signing Youri Tielemans and Mason Mount ahead of Fernandes for the Bournemouth encounter, raising further questions about the captain’s role.
Their recent discussions could help restore unity within the squad, but the upcoming Chelsea fixture will provide an important test of whether Manchester United can translate improved relations into better performances.
