Manchester United could reconsider Michael Carrick’s future after three more matches, despite deciding against dismissing the head coach following Sunday’s disappointing 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox reportedly held crisis talks on Monday before deciding to give the 45-year-old another opportunity to improve results.
The decision was influenced by concerns over the available replacement candidates and the financial implications of terminating Carrick’s contract just five months into his two-year deal.
United are preparing to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with another defeat potentially extending their winless run to nine matches across all competitions.
According to The Athletic, as reported by Express, United could dismiss Carrick during November’s international break if performances fail to improve. That would give him three fixtures against Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa to strengthen his position.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to attend Saturday’s encounter against Chelsea, adding further attention to Carrick’s immediate future as pressure continues to build around Old Trafford.
Former United defender Gary Neville admitted he was surprised by the club’s decision to retain the manager after the Bournemouth defeat.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: “I am surprised, but I am happy because I was absolutely certain that what I witnessed on Sunday would be the end of Michael.”
He also questioned whether Carrick could persuade his players to improve their performances in the coming weeks.
Neville added: “But I hope he can somehow get those players to start playing for him again because they haven’t played for him in the last few weeks.”
Carrick’s future now appears closely linked to United’s results over the coming fixtures. Winning against Chelsea could ease immediate pressure, while further setbacks may force the club’s leadership to reconsider its decision.
