Abderrazak Hamdallah reaches landmark Saudi Pro League tally ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo

At 35, Abderrazak Hamdallah has become the first player to record 184 goal contributions in the Saudi Pro League, moving beyond the previous mark held by Omar Al-Somah.

The Al-Taawoun striker reached the milestone on Friday when he headed in an equaliser against Al-Diriyah in a 1-1 draw. Mohammed Al-Kuwaykibi supplied the cross, with Hamdallah scoring in the 65th minute.

His overall league total now stands at 159 goals and 25 assists. According to the Saudi league’s official statistics, no player had previously reached 184 decisive contributions since the competition became professional.

Hamdallah moved one contribution clear of Syria forward Omar Al-Somah, who finished with 183, made up of 161 goals and 22 assists.

The Morocco international also needs only two more goals to draw level with Al-Somah at the top of the league’s all-time scoring list.

Even Cristiano Ronaldo, who has produced outstanding numbers since joining Al-Nassr, has not matched Hamdallah’s combined total in the competition. Ronaldo has recorded 125 contributions in the Saudi Pro League.

There is one major single-season scoring record that Ronaldo does hold over Hamdallah. In 2024, the Portugal captain surpassed Hamdallah’s league record of 34 goals, set during the 2018-19 campaign, by scoring 35.

A record built over eight years

Hamdallah’s latest achievement reflects his sustained success in Saudi Arabia since arriving in 2018. He has scored for Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, Al-Shabab and Al-Taawoun, winning the league title with his first two clubs.

Alongside those team honours, he has collected a series of individual awards while maintaining his scoring consistency. His goal against Al-Diriyah also meant he had now scored against 27 different opponents in the Saudi top flight.

His club career in the country has been far more prolific than his time with Morocco. Hamdallah’s abrupt departure from the national team camp before the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations became a lasting source of controversy, with Herve Renard’s staff declining to explain publicly what had happened.

He was recalled for the 2022 World Cup but did not score at the tournament. His two goals in the 2025 Arab Cup final for Morocco’s senior team provided a more fitting reminder of his ability, before he announced his international retirement shortly after Morocco’s triumph.

Hamdallah’s legacy will therefore be firmly established in the Saudi Pro League, where he has become one of the competition’s most productive players. For Morocco, however, his career will also be remembered as one of the most significant unfulfilled opportunities of the modern era.
