Morocco finishes second at African Amateur Team Championship

The Moroccan men’s golf team finished second at the African Amateur Team Championship on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Golf Citrus in Hammamet, Tunisia, missing out on the continental title after losing an eight-stroke lead during the final round.

How South Africa Overturned the Leaderboard in Hammamet

Entering the final round of the tournament, the Moroccan selection held an eight-stroke cushion over South Africa after dominating the opening legs of the 17-country competition. However, a surging South African squad fired a collective 202 on the final 18 holes of the Les Oliviers course, while Morocco managed a 214. That 12-stroke swing erased the deficit and handed South Africa its 13th continental crown with a total of 624 strokes.

Morocco finished second overall with 628 strokes, four behind the champions, while Zambia secured the bronze medal with 646 strokes. The tournament field featured 68 players representing 17 nations, including Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, and South Africa.

Adrian Andrade Wins Individual Gold Medal

On the individual leaderboard, Reda El Hali shared third place overall after carding a three-round total of 209 strokes. The individual gold medal went to Adrian Andrade of the Seychelles with a score of 205, followed by South Africa’s Jonathan Andrew Wilsenach in second at 208 and his teammate Judd Sundelson tied with El Hali at 209.

The team event utilized a format where each nation fielded four players—Nizar Bourehim, Mohamed Baouhamou, Reda El Hali, and Youssef El Hali for Morocco—with only the three best scorecards counting toward the daily aggregate. South Africa’s decisive final round was fueled by matching 66s from Wilsenach and Sundelson alongside a 70 from Constantyn Van Wyk.

Coach Brad Stracke Weighs In on the Disappointment

Moroccan coach Brad Stracke praised his players for an excellente performance through the opening two rounds and the early stages of the finale, while expressing regret over their inability to sustain their tempo. Lorsque vous évoluez à un niveau aussi remarquable sans finir la compétition comme vous l’auriez souhaité, vous ressentez naturellement de la déception he told the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP).

Stracke added that significant labor remains to establish the nation as a true regional powerhouse. Il y a encore du travail à accomplir pour continuer à progresser, he said, emphasizing the long-term goal to develop elite competitors despite the heavy expectations.

Zambia Claims Third as African Golf Confederation Elects Bureau

Further down the team standings, host nation Tunisia finished fifth with 650 strokes after late struggles dropped them off the podium, level with La Réunion, while Zambia claimed third. In parallel with the competition, the African Golf Confederation held its general assembly in Hammamet to elect its executive bureau for the 2026–2030 term. Mohamed Aziz Fetni, president of the Tunisian Golf Federation, was elected vice-president representing North Africa, while Uganda’s Johnson Omolo secured a second mandate as president.
