Belinda Bencic returned to the winner’s circle at the WTA 500 tournament in Ningbo, China, advancing to the second round after her opening opponent, Jelena Ostapenko, retired from the match due to illness and injury while trailing 6–3, 1–1.
The 29-year-old Swiss player, ranked 14th in the world, broke Ostapenko’s serve immediately to begin the contest and built an early 3–0 lead. Although Ostapenko managed a break back to narrow the deficit to 3–2, Bencic responded instantly with another service breakthrough and conceded only one more game to seal the opening set in 46 minutes, converting her second set point.
Ostapenko had already required on-court medical attention during the opening set when she fell behind 3–0, with tournament medical staff checking her vital signs and blood pressure. The Latvian player could not continue, resulting in her retirement at the score of 3:6, 1:1, according to tournament reports.
For Bencic, the victory halts a recent two-match skid that followed her fourth-round exit at Wimbledon against Coco Gauff. However, swiss-tennis.ch noted that the reigning Olympic champion carries substantial ranking pressure this week in Asia, as she defends the champion’s points earned last year at the tournament in Tokyo. A slip in Ningbo threatens to push Bencic outside the top 20 of the WTA rankings.
In the second-round stage, Bencic will face Ukrainian player Daria Snigur or Polish qualifier Katarzyna Kawa. Swiss Tennis previews highlight that Bencic enters the next phase as the clear favorite against Kawa, the world number 128, though the Swiss competitor must navigate the same quarter of the draw as world number one Elena Rybakina.
While Bencic advanced, the tournament lost one of its top headliners before a ball was struck. World number 9 Iga Swiatek withdrew from the Ningbo field shortly before her scheduled opening match due to a thigh injury. SRF reported that the 25-year-old Polish player also confirmed the premature end to her season, effectively eliminating her chances of qualifying for the WTA Finals starting November 8 through standard ranking accumulation.
Swiatek finishes her season with a single tournament title and no Grand Slam advancement past the quarterfinals, following a coaching change in March that saw her part ways with Wim Fissette. Organizers noted that Swiatek could potentially travel to the WTA Finals as an alternate should her thigh injury heal in time.
The WTA 500 event in Ningbo continues through the week, with Bencic scheduled to play her second-round match following the conclusion of the qualifier fixtures between Snigur and Kawa.
